The gap between whats happening to Trump in the real world and what happens inside the soft fantasy bubble of the Trump Matrix is vast and widening, wrote Wilson. Its harder and harder to deny his peril. For a long time, Trump and his followers had a kind of fuck-you swagger, confident his Mighty Bullshit Wurlitzer would always overcome truth, decency, the law, and the rules of political physics. This week, they have abandoned that tone for one of screechy belligerence edged with Fuhrerbunker panic.
The purpose of Gaetz and his frat rats wasnt to bring the facts to light, or to expose some nefarious behavior by the Democrats and Republicans on the three committees leading the impeachment inquiry, who were in the SCIF hearing the testimony of yet another fact witness in what is now absolutely established as a quid pro quo in Donald Trumps attempt to extort the Ukrainian government, wrote Wilson. Their dumb stunt light treason, as my friend Molly Jong-Fast calls it wasnt to pin down imaginary Deep State liars. It was a pathetic distraction, the work of a few minutes to try to put a Band-Aid on the boo-boo of Donald Trumps fragile, shaken ego and confidence, all while compromising national security and attempting to intimidate witnesses.
In the Senate, Mitt Romney is making trouble of the best kind, John Thune is signaling his unease, and Mitch McConnell refused to back Trumps lie that he blessed the content of the infamous Zelensky call where the American tried to extort his Ukrainian counterpart, he wrote. The polling and fundraising collapse in key GOP Senate races for 2020 has McConnell pondering the ultimate triage: saving the majority by sacrificing the President.
The panic in the Republican Party is palpable, and delicious, concluded Wilson. Trump will grow more angry that the Senate isnt immolating itself to support him. The House GOP and the Trump media apparatus will demand louder noises, more distractions, more Trump-hadi tactics in support of a President who has already poisoned their future. Its going to be loud, and very, very ugly.

(18,837 posts)Rage and paranoia and megalomania and narcissism and a persecution complex, looking for an escape hatch.
And no, I don't believe McConnell is QUITE ready to cut the cord, but he also has another YEAR to weigh the value of going down on the good ship Individual 1, or taking a deep breath and greasing the wheels for president Pence. His denial of having ANY conversation with Trump over the Ukraine call, let alone Trump's assertion that he said it was "the most innocent call he'd ever heard," may not SOUND like a lot, but it IS...McConnell signaling that he's "IN" as long as he gets his judges, but hey...what would change for McConnell with Pence? NOTHING.
palpable, and delicious

(3,483 posts)And his own website describes him as "Rick Wilson is a seasoned Republican political strategist and infamous negative ad-maker." Again, present tense.
I do know he worked to get George H W Bush elected, Rudy Giuliani elected, Connie Mack in Florida, and others, and was employed by former Shadow President of the USA Dick Cheney.
Don't see any progressive thinking employers on his resume', writes a column for Daily Beast, which I know little about, what I've seen on it though seemed right leaning.
To me, he seems like a 1945 German snickering about the Fuehrer while grooming a Hitler Youth contingent.
I do enjoy him ripping Trump, but I don't see him as a Democratic hero in any way.

(18,837 posts)He's a "Republican strategist."
If any Republican other than Trump had been elected, he'd still be a "vocal Republican strategist."
I've never seen a shred of evidence suggesting he's trying to pretend he's something that he's not.
He's smart enough to know that after Trump leaves office, what's left of the Republican party won't "snap back" immediately, if at all.
I'm assuming that once Trump's gone, he'll return to being a full-time "Republican strategist."
That doesn't mean that there's no validity in what he's saying right now, and I don't have Rick Wilson posters tacked up all over my walls.
If you can read his work and find "Republican talking points," show them to me, and I'll be the first to admit that he's pushing "Republican talking points."
The concept of "adulation" for Rick Wilson is equal to the mindless devotion the MAGAts have for Trump.
I have a brain, and I have powers of discernment. Apparently that didn't come across in my post.

(3,483 posts)At so many posts I see here that portray RW as one of us.
His dislike of Trump doesnt mean that he doesnt lend support to people who may be almost as heinous, but theyre just a lot more stealthy about it.

The stakes are very very high and he has many powerful tools to use. This is the beginning of an epic battle and it's not yet clear how it will turn out

I obviously don't like Wilson's politics, but that won't cause me to deny these facts!
