Democrats Are About To Take Away Trump's Biggest Impeachment Talking Point

Democrats Are About To Take Away Trumpís Biggest Impeachment Talking Point

Trump and the Republicans have been complaining that there has been no formal vote on the impeachment investigation, but House Democrats are moving to change that.

Politico reported:
House Democratic leaders are quietly reaching out to the most vulnerable members of their caucus to gauge whether they would support a formal vote to authorize an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, according to multiple Democratic aides.

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburnís office is leading the outreach and the topic is expected to be discussed at a closed-door leadership meeting Tuesday evening .

Democratic leaders are ďgetting a read on where these members are following a two-week recess,Ē according to an aide familiar with the discussion.

The vote would undermine a key Republican talking point ó that Democratsí inquiry isnít valid because they havenít held a floor vote, as in past presidential impeachment proceedings.

The ideal outcome for Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats would be if they could formalize the impeachment investigation, but not jeopardize their most vulnerable freshmen members of the caucus. Trump is so unpopular that Democratic representatives in districts that the president carried in 2016 donít necessarily need to worry about voting for the impeachment investigation.

When House Democrats decide to hold a vote to formalize the investigation, it will pass. They will have 218 votes. Republicans are dreaming if they believe that a vote will flip the House back to them in 2020.

House Democrats are closing all of Trumpís escape routes. The Republican defenses of Trump are being crushed to bits as the investigation cruises toward impeachment.

1. supposedly after such a vote republicans will have subpoena power and an ability to gum up the works

if so, i'm not in favor of it.

it's just a talking point, and a stupid one at that. it's not worth handing them real power just to neutralize one talking point, while giving them the tools to gin up several better talking points.

impeachment investigations are somewhat analogous to prosecutorial investigations, and an actual impeachment vote is akin to seeking an indictment from a grand jury. the defense is usually not involved in such proceedings, so there's compelling argument for republicans to be in on the impeachment proceedings at all.

they'll get their chance during the trial.

2. I agree. Also, if they give in to Trump's demand, he'll just come up with more, ad nauseum.

I thought the Democrats decided they didn't need a vote. Well, then, don't do it. Keep moving forward and let him stew.

He's probably had parents, teachers, friends and siblings who have given into his childish demands all his life and that is why he is as he is. Force him to finally grow up and face the music.

Enough!

4. I say good, give them subpoena power

because the moment they start using it and telling folks they have to come, well, they can't very well say Dems can't do the same and those folks can't come.

Well, they can but it's going to look pretty stupid and it's going to look bad in the courts.

I'm not worried about idiot republicans. Time to stop being afraid of them.

3. Gotta do what's right even if a majority of those in your district aren't there...yet.

6. This is ridiculous. Republicans made the rule which makes a vote unnecessary.

So why should we obey them when they tell us to rescind it? They made the bed, let them lie in it. And lie, and lie, and lie....

7. While, under the investigation stage, Dems control the Capitol end of the news cycle.

Good, lots of juicy new information, which override trump's stale, overused complaints.

The Speaker's path is working its way along wonderfully.

[No point in giving 'cons more weapons here].

8. No!

If they're for it, I'm against it. We can never trust them.

10. While I was fine the way it was...

The hearings are about to become more public. What better way to start them out than showing a strong majority want it moving forward. Almost like a grand jury vote.
