Fort Worth officer who fatally shot woman in her home has been charged with murder, police say

The white Fort Worth police officer who fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson, a 28-year-old black woman, in her home over the weekend was charged with murder Monday, authorities said.

The officer, Aaron Dean, was booked into the Tarrant County jail, according to police. Earlier in the day, police said the officer had resigned and was facing possible criminal charges.

The officer’s resignation and the outcome of multiple investigations into his actions are likely to serve as a stress test of relations between law enforcement the black community in the region, which is still reeling from an earlier fatal shooting involving a white officer and a black victim. Local leaders have called for a probe of the department, and Jefferson’s family and their attorney want an independent review of Jefferson’s killing, saying they worry race may have played a role....

“None of this information can ease the pain of Atatiana’s family, but I hope it shows the community that we take these incidents seriously,” Kraus said. He apologized to the family on behalf of the department, saying he has “not been able to make sense of why she had to lose her life.”

1. I usually don't comment on cases like this until more info comes out...

but this one seems extraordinarily bad for the officer wielding the gun.

3. The video is damning

and the camera was on his person so there's no going back from that.

I can't even imagine what he was thinking. He was not, in any way, under threat. He took a life for no reason and now will lose his freedom.

7. Amber Guyger's jury didn't

and this is his own law enforcement charging him, just a day after the crime. This seems different, finally.

17. Yes! Why do departments tolerate and maybe even seek out this type of officer?

Why are they trained this way?

9. You have no idea? REALLY!?

In that case, let me fill you in:
This cop was probably a racist, and DEFINITLY a person who needed to kill another human being in order to feel self-empowered.

If not this woman, another. Simple as that. And I'd bet every dollar that your department SHOULD be sued for, this worthless piece of shit 'human', has a MAGAt hat at home.

22. No worries.

Tearing into the local PD who should know better than to hire MAGAt Rascist Assholes who failed their psych eval., or who came back from the sandbox with un diagnosed PTSD and figured 'hey, this guy knows how chain of command works, he will be GREAT for a civilian population.'.

Noooo...kicking in doors and ESCLATING does NOT make for good cops...just SAYIN.

13. Good.

I'm hoping that the Amber Guyger conviction will end up being a turning point for society tolerating this sort of behavior from cops.

Crossing my fingers for a conviction, and please no crying this time.

This insanity has to stop.

15. Imagine the outcome if there were no body camera.

Body cameras are the best thing to ever happen to police officers who do their job properly. For the others, not so much.

Said she had a gun or something. Heck, there are some on this very board who have criticized the deceased for that.

23. He also could have said he identified himself as police,

waited a while before he fired, and said she was reaching for something that looked like a gun. Could have been the TV remote. Ten years ago they may have planted a gun on her.

16. Everyone, including cops, who has a gun is all trigger-happy now because...

...so many people have so many guns.

"F...ed up" is not a good enough term for our insane gun laws.

19. The police had already profiled her (ID'ed occupants of said address, before arrival

My 19 year old grandson called the police on me because I slapped him. they knew who I was upon arrival and they KNEW about my
guns and permit. permit has photo ID. They also knew about her permit.
there should be a moratorium on white officers going into black neighborhoods, traffic stopping any person of color
for six month to a year. and let's see what data shows up.
This is so sad, I've been severely depressed since this happen. Spirit of Peace to her Family.
