"America may not have a friend left after this presidency. " - Adam Schiff
When we get rid of Trump.... we will find an ENORMOUS amount of goodwill among other countries who will want to be our friend again.
Believe that.

(14,122 posts)Then elected bush to another term.
Okay, okay, we learned our lesson.
Obama for 8 years.
Then along comes the atrocity of trDump.
If the world trusts America to install thoughtful, intelligent, capable, ethical,
incorruptible, and accountable leaders the world would have to be nuts. Without question our immediate behavior and history indicates we would be inclined to do otherwise.
The reluctance of the world to trust the USA is understandable.

(12,712 posts)That would be great and I would be all for it.
There may be some cases of a return to a "friendship" as an attitude depending on the context, but it is going to take a long time, much diplomacy, and a decent and credible President, as well as other factors to establish trust and make strong alliances again. For now, we are going in the opposite direction and even more damage can be done.
Take the statement from Trump about the escaping ISIS prisoners going to Europe. That's friendly? That's sending and wishing them terrorism in their homelands, and that's just one example.
So, maybe the word friend is ambiguous and might even differ from what is implied here and, to me beliefs are an aside.

(14,907 posts)believe that this episode was merely the USA showing it's true stripes. We will still have a national legislature half-filled by people who enabled Trump's worst behavior at every turn. We will still have a judiciary full of life-appointed zealots whose world view is incomprehensible to many. Trump's behavior was so extreme that the polite fictions about US values and such failed to hold together, and in doing so exposed to the world how deep the rot is in our society and how unreliable our government is. There is no putting that back in the bottle.

It will take a very, very long time to undo the damage Trump has done.

(10,842 posts)That is the only way we can recover from this on the world stage. We must publicly acknowledge that (as a country) we were wrong and we are doing everything possible to right all those wrongs ASAP.

(2,356 posts)I've heard it said that trust is much like a mirror.
Once broken, we may be successful in "fixing" it,
but the cracks will still always show.

(32,596 posts)But after 3 years of GOP/Chump fuckery - I'm not saying it any more. We have burned our friends and allies in awful ways. We will need to do everything possible earn back to their friendship and trust.
I would propose to the next President to nominate Barack Obama as our Secretary of State. Obama has enough good will and reputation left that he could actually get our friends back, but it will be very hard work.

(8,144 posts)Obama took him on for his FP experience and entrusted him with post-war Iraq, a big deal. Biden has respect and stature on the world stage and an unmatched resume in world affairs.
No time for OTJT in this most crucial area. Other candidates are not even very interested. Our party has not been sufficiently interested.
As Joe showed in his FP speech, issues are interconnectedclimate change and FP, for instance. We are interdependent with our allies and we must be prepared for our enemies.
I am sure Biden could get the best crew to work on the many problems we have neglected and relationships we have made a mess of. From Secretary of State to rebuilding the state department, he will draw best and brightest. The candidate who was nearest to Obama and thoroughly schooled and up to date in these perilous times is Biden.

(8,368 posts)We just came back from Italy, where we visited many cities. Every Italian we spoke to hates Trump but loves Americans. The only person we met who liked Trump was - go figure - a Chinese man who works in the U.S. for a big investment firm that works for the wealthy. He thinks the president is "doing the right thing."

(32,653 posts)With or without trump, I have doubts about the future of this country.
Our elections are still not secure, the nation is too divided, and half the country is too ignorant.
Democracy requires a well informed populace.
A major party is willing to sell us out for their own personal gain.
Why would any world leader in his/her right mind want to deal with us?

From the outside looking in we are collectively responsible for our government billed as by the people.
In more ways that I want to admit we really are all collectively responsible.
