American healthcare - in a fucking story

Trying to help a dear friend in Florida; the story. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She was released from the hospital on her second day after falling. Her fall at home in her condo broke the toilet tank so before anyone could come to the rescue her, the place had 2 inch's of water, throughout. Social workers came over to see that her place was not habitable so the only place that could accept her (no beds available anywhere) was emergency temporary stay at Hospice. We wanted to get her into rehab to get her stronger but rehab (per insurance) said that she had to spend 3 days in the hospital to allow insurance to pay for rehab.

Now her insurance, that she has paid for says that since she entered Hospice that they will no longer cover anything ... Humanna
... the same folks that kicked her out after 2 days in the hospital , knowing full well that she would not be allowed into rehab.

END THE FUCKING INSURANCE DEATH PANELS

1. There are so many similar stories.

But we are told that single payer cannot possibly "work" in the US. Reality is that the current, profit centered system only works for the stockholders of the health care industries.

3. Isn't it a bit misleading that Humana has the word Human in their company name?

Horror story. Does she have any family or friends or a church that can take her in?
This is every older person's nightmare.

4. We have Humana Medicare advantage insurance

and my wife has stage-4 cancer as well. The bills are running about $100k/month for treatment meds & doctor visits etc. Humana is covering everything except out of pocket deductibles.

Thanks for posting this, I will make sure she does not end up in hospice easily.

5. That shouldn't be legal for her insurance to stop coverage.

She stayed in a hospice facility. She never entered into a contract with them and was never their patient.

I'd hire a lawyer and start contacting reporters.

Maybe that's just a pipe dream though.

6. I agree but maybe not on how to get there

And I wish it wasnít so hard to get there. Healthcare is a right.

American government is broken.

7. Got into a conversation with some people at a payday loan place I go to...

(I know I know, desperate times call for desparate measures). Anyways, one woman just had heart surgery where, the surgery was approved by her insurance, the anesthesia was not. She was allergic to the one they approved and her doctor had to emphasize that it would KILL HER if it were used. So they had to compromise with a different anesthesia, another generic that she also had a violent reaction to and almost died from during the operation. It was a heart ablation. Thankfully she survived, but damn, that's fucked up.
