A Betrayal Too Far

Nothing captures the moral and geopolitical bankruptcy of Donald Trump’s Hobbesian worldview better than his rank betrayal of the Kurds.
<snip>

Worse, Trump paraded his strategic stupidity and precipitous treachery in all their solitary splendor. Prior to proclaiming “my great and unmatched wisdom” in mastering the situation unassisted, he remonstrated that the Kurds had been “paid massive amounts of money and equipment” to fight a brutal terrorist regime which—he failed to add—American forces could not subdue alone.
<snip>

It was particularly surreal, therefore, that the White House announcement of Trump’s decision treated the problem of captive ISIS fighters as a budgetary problem... - The Bulwark

Our national security is in peril.

1. Absolutely. This isn't something he'll be able to slide underneath

the rug. This is as serious as it gets.

5. Any guesses?

I sincerely want to know what I'm missing here. I totally believe you, but I thought Trump would reverse course on Syria and I was totally wrong.

11. The only thing that he is really working at is making this country such a mess that he will

then be able to declare National Emergency and complete the takeover. Forget the fact that he is the National Emergency.

10. I would not blame the Kurds if they just opened up up all the "cells" holidng the

ISIS terrorists and let them go and then get the heck out of Dodge. Why on earth should they continue to hold them prisoner after the Americans abandoned them to be slaughtered by the Turks.

12. Where can they go?

I believe they are trapped between the proverbial rock and hard place. And the Turks deem them a terrorist group so expect no mercy there. Trump has condemned them to death. Damn him to hell a thousand times.

13. Then they have nothing to lose by setting the ISIS fighters loose.

Maybe even work out an agreement to work together to get out of the shithole. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

14. Nothing to lose?

They spent the last few years systematically and brutally fighting to capture them and destroy their caliphate. ISIS fighters are hardcore ideologues bent on establishing a place from which they can grow their brand of Islam. They see the Kurds as infidels who have to be killed. They won't work out a deal.

Trump has sentenced the Kurds to death at the hands of Turkey and Russia and if the ISIS prisoners get out, they aren't going to help them escape.

15. If the Kurds are being abandoned to be slaughter, the only revenge that they can

have is to release the hard core ISIS fighters and let the world deal with them. As the saying goes, payback is a b*tch. The ISIS fighters may not help but nobody else is either. The Kurds owe no loyalty to the West nor should we expect it for what we are doing to them. They are nothing but canon fodder to the west.

16. Is it possible that the Kurds might massacre their ISIS prisoners?

Rather than release them, simply shoot them in their cells. It could be seen as a safer, more expedient solution.
