He Didn't Get Here Alone

Donald Trump did not ascend to the highest office in the land due to intelligence, political skill, or patriotic ideals. In fact, he was sorely lacking in all of the above.

He achieved the presidency through the machinations of a adversarial foreign power, along with a Republican party willing to install a hand-picked Russian puppet in the White House in the belief that they, too, could manipulate him into doing their bidding.

Millions of people voted for him – some out of ignorance of his history, some because they believed his never-to-be delivered on promises, and some because his obvious racism and bigotry mirrored their own. Many were persuaded by so-called “religious leaders” who marketed a lying, adulterous, corrupt businessman as a ‘good Christian’. Others were simply taken in by a professional con-man, whose snake-oil seemed a perfect tonic to cure the nation’s ills.

Once installed in the Oval Office, Republican powers-that-be enabled Trump’s every move, regardless of how unethical, unlawful, and/or immoral his actions might be. They ignored the distancing of our allies – because a SCOTUS pick was more important than our standing in the global community. They ignored the cries of children locked in cages – because tax-cuts for the wealthy out-weighed upholding our long-held values as a nation. They supported his racism, bigotry, and divisiveness – because advancing their political agenda was far more important than the well-being of our country and the unity of its citizens.

And now Trump is where he is – a man being exposed as the traitor he’s always been, a corrupt liar willing to sell-out his own country for political power and personal gain, a useful idiot whose own stupidity and arrogance led him to believe he was above the law.

The man who stood proudly on the world’s stage and declared Putin more credible than our own intelligence community, the man who idolizes despots like Kim Jong Un and Mohamad Bin Salman, the man who surrounded himself with inept toadies and placed incompetent cronies in positions of power, the man who used his position to enrich himself while his policies destroyed the livelihoods of American citizens, is about to stand on a very different stage – and the eyes of the entire world will be upon him as the depths of his corruption are exposed, and as his crimes are revealed for all to see.

As we watch events unfold over the coming months, let’s never forget that Trump did not get where he is alone. He was aided and abetted by the Republican party, and could never have achieved his corrupt goals without those party members who – wilfully and with malice aforethought – assisted him in perpetrating his crimes against the country, as well as crimes against humanity.

I do not intend to mitigate Trump’s responsibility for his own actions by suggesting that his guilt is somehow diminished because it is shared with others in the GOP. But those who defended his lawlessness, shielded his treasonous behaviour, and allowed his corruption to flourish must forever be seen as guilty parties in their own right, and the Republican party held out as an example of a political power that will sink to the lowest depths in furtherance of own their greed, their own immorality, and their own blatant disregard for their country and its people.

4. I hope investigations continue for years

It is likely that many in the GOP committed felonies in their fanatical pursuit of wealth and power. They need to be rooted out, if we can manage to get a clean DoJ again.

5. Wow, a beautiful piece of writing.

I've read a lot of stuff on Agent Orange, but never an OP so concisely written. It took a corrupted political party to nominate him and a corrupted voter-base to install a corrupted President.

7. Far beyond aiding and abetting

The Republican Party invested heavily to build a lush swamp and fertilized it heavily with grade-a bullsh*t.

Their contempt for the facts, the truth, the majority, the rule of law, ethics, and their insistence on unquestioned loyalty to party created the perfect breeding ground for Donnie to carry his evil business model over to the political realm.

If it wasn't Donnie, it would have been someone else.

They didn't just aid and abet him. They grew him in their garden. They own this disaster.

pro-development, Club for Growth - they've all been planning this for several decades I would bet, Russia and Trump in the mix to grab power.

10. It'll be hard to feel for the republican party.

If this stains them for decades and fosters a new era for democrats in all three branches they deserve no sympathy. Their greed and lust for power put them where they are.

Before Newt Gingrich led the House in the '90s, Democrats held the majority there for 40 years. Trump may usher in a new losing streak for his enablers.

11. Trump's latest non-presidential action

Last edited Fri Sep 27, 2019, 11:35 PM - Edit history (1)

has opened a Pandora's box, and Nancy is happy to let all the demons out. So they can be seen by all.

Trump has surrounded himself for a very long time with enablers. It's been obvious for a long time that in Trump's thinking, he could do anything, rules, laws, the Constitution were inconveniences he could safely ignore.

Some people were willing to look the other way and pretend things were fine, to avoid any personal repercussions. Enablers in short.

Time for them to face the music too.

And for those who think this is a Democratic vendetta against Trump or the GOP, the picture is much bigger than that. The very fabric of American Democracy, and the value of the work done by previous Presidents irrespective of party, are at stake.

16. Traitors or just amoral fellow travellers?

Fellow travellers along for the ride for what was in it for them, real or imagined.

The average Trump voter did the same, after all. Trump made them promises, and they went along for the ride based on what they thought was in it for them.

Pity neither group, Trump voters and Trump GOP members bothered to think long term, specifically, the damage Trump and their actions could do to America.

But I'm talking with hindsight. Pity some definite, affirmative action to stop Trump in his tracks could not have taken place much earlier.

Suggestion: Next POTUS - mental health check, tax returns shown, effective dumping of business interests. Please!

15. I just hope that as the Impeachment investigation continues

and goes to a decision about his future, that it will be just the beginning of his woes. May he be hounded to the Gates of Hell for the terrible things he has done to this country and people around the world unlucky enough to be impacted by his decisions. It will be fitting for him to rot in prison and for the tRump brand to crash into infamy. May he never again have one moment of peace as he lives long enough to lose everything including his freedom. No sympathies for his criminal family either. May their fates follow a similar path.

17. Revenge

is a strong emotion, but past history shows that, in the USA anyway, ex-presidents are treated kindly.

As long as he is neutralised politically and his Twitter account removed completely, I'm fine with that.

Of course, in other times and countries it's a bit harsher - you may dream about the Mussolini solution - dead, upside down hanging along with other fascists. (Yes, the picture is on Google.)

Your choice as to what you think is more appropriate.

19. Justice sought is not revenge ...

... any more than a prison sentence is imposed as 'revenge' for crimes committed.

In addition to his impeachment woes,Trump will be facing numerous state charges in NY - and having his Twitter account taken away isn't likely be the only penalty attached.

Ex-presidents may be treated kindly - but traitors aren't.

Demonizing all Dems and promoting conspiracy theories against D lawmakers for decades. This insanity has almost destroyed our political system. Someone like Trump would never have gotten close to the White House without that assault on reality.

Take the White House and even the Senate and they will still be there, waiting for their opportunity to return, waiting for those on the Left to become complacent and it's a safe bet that will happen sooner or later.
