It really feels like we're getting closer by the day to a totalitarian dictatorship.

We have to believe the constitution is sufficiently robust to weather this shit storm but I don't know anymore.

Today, in Manhattan, NY, Trump's lawyers won an injunction based on the theory that he simply is - in fact and indeed - ABOVE THE LAW.

Wow.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Congressional subpoenas have been treading a steady path to a legal graveyard, where they rot and die.

Two men are largely responsible for this - Bill Barr and Mitch McConnell.

What will happen if/when the 2020 elections get canceled?

13. YEP

and 1/3 of the country will DEMAND that we roll over and take it, with 1/3 shugging and babbling, "they are both the same ..."

5. I wonder if this is kind of what an occupation feels like.

I've been reading some WWII history for a class about the Nazi occupation of Norway, and what it did to people psychologically. Obviously that was a much worse situation - although the military casualties were relatively low for that war, people were arrested, shot or exiled; and for most of the population there were serious shortages of food and other goods. But the psychological impact was devastating, too, because people didn't know whom they could believe or trust; who might be a collaborator that could turn them over to the Germans; families were torn apart; the newspapers and radio broadcasts were controlled and unreliable; and people were scared, depressed, and felt helpless. It took a couple of decades for the country to recover (and the experience might have contributed to their current intense respect for democracy).

Although we're nowhere near there yet, there seems to be a frightening and depressing sense of helplessness hanging over the latest developments because nobody seems to be able to stop Trump's government from doing whatever it wants. I hope something breaks open soon.

8. We could also be getting closer by the day to a revolution

by the masses. People can only put up with so much.

We have been beaten down by their corruption and abuse, but eventually the impotent rage of the oppressed majority will decide that enough is enough and put a stop to it. We haven't reached a breaking point yet, but I think we are very close.

9. The ball is in the GOP's court. They can cancel the elections if they want to

or they can preside over a farce election. It's completely up to them because the people with a little bit of power to do something don't seem to recognize the threat we're facing.

10. The Constitution is a compact between the states.

No elections, no compact. Secession will be brought to the table.

California, New York and New England will be the first to leave.

12. I don't think the 2020 elections will be canceled. Way

too heavy-handed. What i fear is that, with lots and lots of Russian (and probably other countries as well) help the election results will be unclear. Enter the Supremes, ready to produce an electoral victory for Lord Pissypants a la Bush v Gore ( opinion authored by Billy Boofer).
