'I would tell Joe to wait': Democrats warn Kennedy against challenging Markey

Joe Kennedy doesn’t just have to beat incumbent Ed Markey to win a Senate seat. He’ll also have to trounce Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Senate Democrats campaign arm — and maybe AOC.

The 38-year-old congressman and grandson of Robert F. Kennedy will confront a buzzsaw of Washington Democrats if he takes the leap to challenge Markey in Massachusetts, which would create a massive distraction for the party in a safe Democratic seat amid a battle for both the White House and the Senate majority.

“That kind of intra party fighting is not good in the long term. And I don’t think it will be good for Joe Kennedy,” warned Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). “I’m a survivor of the Kennedy-Carter fight. I know how long those sentiments last.”

With Kennedy flirting with the race and leading early polls, Markey has moved quickly to shore up support from both the D.C. establishment and prominent progressives. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has endorsed him and Schumer said the party is “fully behind Senator Ed Markey.” Kennedy called Schumer about the race but the Senate minority leader didn’t divulge what was said.

1. i was wondering if his real plan was to run for Warren's seat assuming she will win the nomination

he has endorsed her.

the talk about challenging MArkey was to get his name in the news and as a way to avoid a primary with MArkey they will encourage him to run for Warren's seat . and he will be less likely to have opponents there because he had already gotten his name out there .

2. patience is advisable

markey is a decent senator and if ms warren is elected president we will need him to beat the republican appointee.

3. Did Kennedy say anything concrete that indicated he was interested in challenging Markey?

If, so, when and where, please?

Or is this all media speculation whipped into being so they could have a "controversy" to talk about? I never heard Kennedy say that he was seriously looking into challenging Markey, but maybe I missed something? If Kennedy himself has never said anything about making a run for Markey's seat, why is this even a story? If he did, could someone please point me to a quote of his, because I sure missed it.

5. OK, thanks for that

It sounds like he's running up a flag to see which way the wind blows.

I hope he stands down and keeps his powder dry. I know six years is a long time to wait, but I think he'd be better off letting Markey have another term, and I certainly have no love for Markey. Plus, he can always go for Warren's seat in case she runs for (and wins) on the national ticket next year.

6. And how, Mr. Kennedy, is Ed Markey part of "the system that has been letting people down?"

"Our system has been letting down a lot of people for a long time, and we can't fix it if we don't challenge it. I've got some ideas on how to do that. And I don’t think our democratic process promises anyone a turn. What it does promise is the chance for anyone to earn it — if we think we have something to offer and are willing to put ourselves and our ideas out there."

Has he articulated a single way in which he is offering something different than Markey besides age and name??????

It makes me really mad.
