GOP congressman: We have mass shootings because we don't teach kids not to covet

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) thinks suicides and mass shootings happen because politicians encourage "jealousy" and "covetousness."

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told House colleagues that teaching the Bible in schools is the only way to stop gun violence. And he blamed the rise in suicides and mass shootings on politicians teaching children to desire stuff.

At a House Judiciary Committee markup on Tuesday, lawmakers considered legislation to address gun violence through "extreme risk protection orders" (red flag laws that allow courts to temporarily arm those deemed a violent threat to others or themselves), limits on high-capacity magazines, and new restrictions on gun ownership for those convicted of hate crimes. All three measures passed, but Gohmert was not happy.

"I would just submit to you that we can use these words and try to craft laws," he argued. "But people will continue to kill themselves at a higher and higher alarming rate. And there will be continuing these mass shootings we didn't use to deal with."

Hey Gohmert...................did you by some strange chance when you were sitting in your room at night waiting for the boogie man to get you...................know that more people have died by religion, and because of your lack of empathy, people are dying in your state while sitting in cages, hows that morality going for you and your religious principles of caring........................and what is really insulting that you get paid to be a complete jerk-off...........

2. Psssst, GOP shit-head, you love capitalism AND America, right?

I only ask because American capitalism is explicitly consumeristic... YOUR BELOVED CAPITALISM IS BUILT ON "HEY, I WANT *THAT* THING"

Louie Gohmert is often called the dumbest person in Congress, for good reason. He's in the running for biggest asshole, but since there are a lot of Repukes in Congress, that is a much tighter race.

6. No, no, no, no... you don't understand

The problem is not with privileged people wanting things. For example, if your son or daughter wants a BMW for their 16th birthday, or if your mistress might want some jewelry, that’s one thing.

But too many of the wrong people wanting the things you have, when it is not appropriate for them to have those things, is problematic.

7. Ah, yes of course... like the plebs wanting medicines and food with balanced nutrients

and personal protection equipment in the workplace. THAT is certainly worthy of moralizing and scolding. Peons don't know what is good for them. Silly me.

8. I was going to steal a portion of George Carlin's epic rant about the Ten Commandments and

the particular portion about "coveting", but your reply pretty much captured the essence of that!

One of my all-time favorite lines of his from that rant..."Your neighbor buys a dildo that plays 'Oh come, all you faithful'...you want one too!!!"

4. Hey dumbass: we have mass shootings because of the NRA

If the NRA was doing their job right, these gun nuts would know that as soon as they get the urge to blast a crowd of civians, they need to turn their semi-automatic penis extensions on themselves.

5. How about

People who have no idea what they are talking about and have no expert information on a subject, but open their mouths to express religious whims as if they are facts and causes, shut their gobs and get out of politics completely because they are demonstrating both great ignorance and gross incompetence. And we PAY him for this?

The problem of mass shootings is complex, multi-faceted and even reflects some deep, social issues that need to be investigated and addressed intelligently and as a nation, not by way of sectarian proclamations from people who should be coveting more depth and intelligence. It is not a matter for simpletons trying to pretend they know something, (trumpism). That is no going to solve it and it smacks more of theocratic posturing.

Part of the problem, IMHO, is people like him in a position to craft any laws at all. Stupidity and ignorance cannot craft viable solutions. And, I am not an anti-theist.

Oh, and, as most of us know, the Bible depicts many gruesome and violent acts, so don't give people ideas. Alex in A Clockwork Orange found the violence to be horrorshow.

11. Texas GOP's party line on gun control: it's not only unconstitutional, it's sacrilegious.

Yes, GAWD demands that you buy a shitload of 30-round magazines for your military-style weapon that HE (in His infinite wisdom) *allowed* you to have.

Per the Texas Observer, 9/4/2019:
https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-shooting-midland-odessa-governor-greg-abbott-guns-rights/
After the Midland-Odessa Shooting, Texas Republicans Double Down on God and Guns Doctrine
<snip>
As the calls for gun control grew louder, just as they have after each high-profile mass shooting, Texas state Representative Matt Schaefer, a right-wing Tea Partier who hails from Louie Gohmert-land, took the opportunity to defiantly declare on social media that he would not be doing anything to change gun laws.

‘Do something!’ is the statement we keep hearing. As an elected official with a vote in Austin, let me tell you what I am NOT going to do. I am NOT going to use the evil acts of a handful of people to diminish the God-given rights of my fellow Texans. Period. None of these so-called gun-control solutions will work to stop a person with evil intent,” Schaefer wrote hours after the shooting.

He continued: “I say NO to ‘red flag’ pre-crime laws. NO to universal background checks. NO to bans on AR-15s, or high capacity magazines. NO to mandatory gun buybacks. What can we do? YES to praying for victims. YES to praying for protection. YES to praying that God would transform the hearts of people with evil intent. YES to fathers not leaving their wives and children. YES to discipline in the homes. YES to supporting our public schools. YES to giving every law-abiding single mom the right to carry a handgun to protect her and her kids without permission from the state, and the same for all other law-abiding Texans of age. YES to your God-given, constitutionally protected rights. YES to God, and NO to more government intrusions.”

His comments went viral, drew national coverage, and sparked widespread condemnation from gun reform advocates around the country, including actress and liberal activist Alyssa Milano. “Can someone cite which passage of the Bible God states it is a god-given right to own a gun?” she tweeted in response to Schaefer. This prompted Senator Ted Cruz to fire off an extended tweetstorm in defense of Schaefer.
<snip>
The Texas GOP’s views on guns are rooted in the religious right’s enthusiastic embrace of Christian Americanism—a radical theological strain that espouses the belief that the Founding Fathers explicitly shaped the United States in the vision of the Bible. The Second Amendment, as one Texas pastor put it, enshrines the “biblical right of self-defense” from any illegal forces, including “your own government.”

Therefore, mass shootings are seen as the result of inherent moral failings—like video games, overmedication, Godless public schools—whereas the tools of mass shootings—high-powered semi-automatic rifles, high-capacity magazines, high-caliber hollow point bullets—serve a higher purpose and are to be defended at all costs.

Ol' Louie is to stupid.

But away that top layer of stupidity thinking it's brilliance, and you find smoother layer of stupid. It's stupid all the way down.
