Heat Related Salmon Die-off In Alaska

The heat wave is higher than climate change models predicted
The water temperatures have breaking records at the same time as the air temperatures, according to Sue Mauger, the science director for the Cook Inletkeeper.
Scientists have been tracking stream temperatures around the Cook Inlet, located south of Anchorage, since 2002. They've never recorded a temperature above 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Until now.
On July 7, a major salmon stream on the west side of the Cook Inlet registered 81.7 degrees.
Mauger said she and her team published a study in 2016, creating models outlining moderate and pessimistic projections for how climate change would drive temperatures in Alaska's streams.
"2019 exceeded the value we expected for the worst-case scenario in 2069," she said.
Mauger said that the warm temperatures are affecting salmon in various ways, depending on the stream.
"Physiologically, the fish can't get oxygen moving through their bellies," Mauger said. In other places in the state, the salmon "didn't have the energy to spawn and died with healthy eggs in their bellies."

1. needs more coal?

GOPers have been denying global warming since at least the old Bush. I suppose the solution to the salmon die-off is a package of tax cuts for the ultra rich, dismantle the EPA, destroy public education, remove all regulations on coal and petroleum, build a wall, and speed up species extinction.

Life must be simpler when you can't see beyond your bank account.

2. CNN just did a story on this and said the temp was 8 above average!

That is A LOT!!! Does everyone agree that this is happening way faster than predicted. Ice melts, overall higher temps, etc are at levels not expected for another 30-70 years, not now. I read on DU last night that some scientists are changing their predictions with the new data and by 2100 (80 years) the ave temp on Earth will be 5.4- 9 higher. WOW!

I suggest people think twice when planning a new family.

3. I agree with your suggestion

Billiions will starve if temperatures go that high. And they will. I don't see anything really going on to stop this. And we are actually increasing carbon output since Paris.

4. Human greed is what is allowing this to continue unchecked.

People should go extinct...too bad the innocent plants and animals will be killed by humans. They don't deserve it while greedy, self serving people do. That is just my opinion of course.
