state senator tweets name of person who left 74 cent tip on $119 bill

New Jersey state senator calls customer who left 74-cent tip on a $119 bill a ‘jerk,' reveals name on Twitter

A New Jersey state senator called out a customer who left a 74-cent tip on bill that was over $100, calling him a “jerk” and revealing his name on Twitter.

Declan O’Scanlon, a Republican, ate at the Colts Neck Inn the night after the bad tipper and said the restaurant was abuzz that someone would leave such a small tip on a large bill.

“It strikes me that the jerks of the world tend to count on people not knowing they’re jerks and maybe it’s time for that to change,” O’Scanlon told northjersey.com. “This guy didn’t just fail to tip, he wanted it to sting. He calculated this and gave her 74 cents to make it hurt. And it did, and I think it sucks.”

O’Scanlon posted an unedited photo of the receipt which includes the customer’s name, signature and the last four digits of his debit card.

Perhaps instead of making a victim of this prick, the Senator could work on Living Wage Laws. Midnight Writer Aug 2019 #1

And the printed receipt without details is $119.26 ?

These bad tip Internet dramas have almost always turned out to be hoaxes.

There is no way to verify anything from that photo.

Many people tip in cash and then even out so it is a .00 charge.

On the other hand, he is an “R.” Minding their own business is not their strong suit.

I would think the customer has grounds for legal action against both the restaurant owner and the elected official

bad service is a perfectly legit reason not to tip.... it is THE reason. And he doesn't deserve to be publicly shamed over it.

Servers don’t make enough outside of tips and get taxed on gratuities. There’s something wrong with that. Others shouldn’t have the power to decide if service was adequate enough for them to wage subsidize. It’s demeaning and very close to slavery.

That being said, the customer’s privacy was clearly violated and he has grounds for a lawsuit. Not a very smart senator or establishment.

I generally tip very generously, but I will give low tips or no tips to inattentive servers or servers who make a lot of absent-minded mistakes. A tip should be earned and no one should be shamed for not giving one.
