Had a patient check-in the clinic today with (I thought) a firearm.

I work in a busy HMO clinic, hundreds of patients every day, and this one guy made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Sixty-something white guy, black Korean War Vet. baseball cap with a Trump button on the front, black tee-shirt that said something like "Democrats will destroy the United States of America," and black jeans. On his front jeans pocket there appeared to be some sort of carry permit hanging out. I checked him in and told the reg. supervisor. The supervisor called security who tracked him down in the cardiology department (I knew where he was because I checked him in). Guard politely asked the patient if he was carrying a firearm and the patient reported that he left his gun in the car. The guard told us that his permit was actually hanging off an empty holster.

Later that day while I was working in another department, a different security guard stopped to visit with me for a minute and I light-heartedly asked him if he had heard about the firearm report and he answered, "Which one? We had three guns today." This has NEVER been a problem before.

WTF is happening?

4. Thanks, MM. We all try to stay safe. Truth is it could happen to any of us at any time.

I've worked at the HMO for almost five years and this is the first time I've even heard about someone bringing a firearm inside. We have signs on the entrance doors clearly stating that weapons are not allowed. Perhaps I'm simply more alert to it now. I don't even really worry about me; I worry about my children, my friends, my co-workers.

2. I hope it doesn't become the norm. Nationally, 92% don't carry ever. I would hope

it never becomes acceptable to carry in a healthcare clinic, and anyone who does should be checked out.

You did the right thing.

6. My son's doctor was shot to death by a patient in an exam room.

He was the nicest doctor, actually saw my son at his house on a weekend once, didn't even charge him. He was a young doctor, with a wife and kids. Every time I think of those kids I tear up thinking how much they must miss having that wonderful man by their side as they grow up. Just so senseless and awful, made all the local papers. https://patch.com/california/fountainvalley/police-say-elderly-man-shot-huntington-beach-doctor

He had the misfortune of seeing a derranged gun toting patient; medical offices don't employ metal detectors, and shouldn't need to.

8. OMG, that was horrible.

That must have been difficult for your son, having his doctor killed in cold blood.

9. It was. For all of us. But our pain was nothing compared to the doctor's poor family.

11. Of all the people who are Trumphumpers, veterans puzzle me the most. While they were

at war, Don's dad was buying him a bone spurs x-ray and Don was out playing sports. He's cracked wise about sexually transmitted diseases being his own, personal Vietnam. And now, in office, he reduced the waiting list at the VA by 2/3 by rejecting 200,000 applications from people who actually served.

12. Great post.

Sums it up. I, too, do not understand why any vet would support this coward.
