I fear that a force of evil has been unleashed

If that is not enough hyperbole for you, I think it has been unleashed on the entire world, not just the United States.

I think the only thing that can defeat it is a force for good. It is a battle of darkness versus light. Perhaps you think it is only exaggeration, speaking from fear and paranoia? Perhaps?

In my opinion, it is a force unlike any we have seen since the end of WWII and the beginning of the Baby Boom generation. We have been fortunate in many, many ways.

But, many forces for good have left this world or are soon leaving it. There is a vacuum when they leave us. That vacuum will be filled by evil if we cannot gather the goodness of humankind.

In my opinion, we are witnessing a change in our world. We see it all around the world. Powerful demagogues and criminals are making their move to take over.

We must come together if mankind is to survive.

It is up to us.

14. Take a vacation around the Scandinavian countries, I think it will open your eyes

These people live happy, without the crap that we live here, if we are to change home then we need to look at them and try to imitate what they have done, and in a nutshell, through regulations they have eliminated greed, which in my opinion it is what is destroying our country.

Eliminate the huge bonuses CEOs and other executives receive, eliminate the perks that government officials enjoy, such as salary for life, healthcare for life, as a matter of fact, make them pay for healthcare like the rest of us do, anyone who works at corporations has to pay their share of healthcare, why shouldn't politicians do the same? It will save money and it will give them a good feel for how lousy the current healthcare system in this country is. Regulate industries, save the World from global warming, etc.

Part of the problem in USA is that the young people who are thinking about gong into government, at least on the republican side, are people being trained by the crooks from the republican side who are in government right now, "young republicans" are nothing but a bunch of lemmings filled with hate who will only continue the crap republicans do today, and unless this starts changing, we will continue to fight like we do today.

31. Sorry butb with ethnic diversity comes division...

There is a lot of data to show that group cohesion, starts to fracture with ethnic diversity. A huge reason that the nation's we point to as successful socialist states is that there is relatively little diversity.

So people feel less resentment when the "out group" uses social benefits. The influx of immigrstion, and especially brown skin immigration, is what's triggering all the division now.

So anytime i see a progressive in the USA long for a Scandinavian solution, I feel compelled to point this fact out

I think we face a reality of a culture that must balance immigrantion and diversity versus social programs.

We won't likely be able to keep maximum of both for very long

5. One name for that evil force is Vladimir Putin.

After the breakup of the USSR, Putin and his cronies stole much of the wealth of Russia, and they’ve used some of their enormous wealth to sow discord around the world. We cannot be in Putin’s mind to know his ultimate goals, but an acquaintance who has worked in Russia, speaks fluent Russian, and has met Putin several times says that he is “wicked smart”—a man with brains, wealth, no morals as evidenced by the number of critics he has had murdered, and a desire for ultimate world power. We should all be afraid of such evil.

Using cyber warfare, he has attacked many countries, especially Western countries, and stoked the nationalism that is driving destabilization in many countries, including the US, Italy, France., etc. Unfortunately, a number of billionaires in the world are just fine with Putin’s tactics and actions. Rupert Murdoch and his sons actively aid the disinformation campaign, though their propaganda predates Putin. But people like Robert Mercer were certainly willing to subvert the US government by helping Putin steal a US election. The only way to fight such billionaires, who are global players without alliance to any one country, is to try to take away their power. Obvious solution, no obvious way to accomplish it.

8. The stock market crashes, beginning in 1929, were labeled, [instead of the usual

'panics', 'crashes', 'crisis', etc.] with the softer term, 'depression', implying a passing mood. As the markets and economies continued to decline, the soft depression became the 'Great Depression', synonymous with a pervasive, sour/bad, lasting mood around the world, with serious consequences

In historical context, such moods do tend to be cyclical. Various theorists have mapped these cycles and subcycles in various ways. [Kondratieff, 10 year, 4 year Presidential cycles in the US, fractal waves, etc, etc.].

Yes, we are due for, or are already in, a downturn. Many economists, etc. are documenting declining factors in local and world economies.

10. Not so much supernatural or demonic, but a backlash to the 90's when authoritarians fell, and

similar to the one that led up to WW2.

I'd use the words democracy vs authoritarianism, rather than 'good vs evil,' because of the fundamentalist Christian branding of those terms.

Also, the idea of "unleashed" indicates that there was some cognizent "force" keeping it "leashed." Once again, a very fundamentalist Christian worldview.

I don't need to believe something is 'evil' to resist or oppose it. And I don't believe that there is much in this world that can be called purely "good."

Just better or worse for people and the environment.

"Pure Evil" is a construct, and it's been used to dehumanize people, including Jews in Germany. I would avoid it - it can backfire.

If we focus on the outcomes of authoritarian regimes, then we have enough to damn them.

Homosexuality is "evil" to Rwers. We should not be validating their terminology by using it.

I take back "democracy and authoritarianism" "Justice" and "injustice" make more sense.

"The arc of justice...."

the russians use of it and its use of the racism/immigration issue worldwide

here the problem is very easy to turn around - as soon as a serious effort to use AI to digitize RW hate radio starts the radio advertising industry will have to start asking clients if they really want t o support trump, global warming, and racism and the only unique advantage the right has - the talk radio monopoly - will fall apart

the gloom and doom is unwarranted

12. We've been here before.

Apparently Yeats saw events of the 1890s as beginning the decline of civilization, with the wars, rise of fascism, authoritarian socialism, and collapse of order in many nations following over the next quarter century. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin the other day said she sees this this new era of destabilizing anxiety over enormous changes and threats as similar to the 1890s. (My words.)

The Second Coming
BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Time to remember that our grandparents' generations saved the United States from succumbing. They used the problems of that era to make great but stabilizing advances within the existing system, including redistribution of income and regulations on capitalism, that created our greatest period of prosperity to date.

Our turn.

15. It's just the same old public interest common good vs greed and self interest

but that breaks down into common good vs despots and their agents

Despots and private interests seek authoritarian rule to enact their greed

Greed is almost always at the head of authoritarian agendas

They seek order, and usually but not always, law to further their ends.

Greed is realized through power and control. Order and exploitation follow.

Freedom and democracy is alien to these agendas, dangerous in fact.

So yes, it may seem the world is beset by a general unnamed force, but really
it's the same thing that has defined political struggles since 1776.

The American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Revolutions of 1848, European conflicts of
the same origin through 1914 (Italy, Franco-Prussian), the Russian Revolution (who thought they
had a different solution), the World Wars, The Cold War, Middle Eastern conflicts. It's all the same.
Even terror groups are on their own lawless agendas driven by greed and power.

It's all about power and control, despots vs freedom. Maybe freedom was an illusion brought on by
a new continent to spread its wings? Can there be freedom in a densely populated society? We must
have some law and order. With so many warring factions, and States, how can conflict be resolved?

United Nations. But, has Trump ever heard of it?

The force has been unleashed alright, but it's not using cable news as much as Facebook to achieve its goals.

Repeat after me, "The Dems will not win the White House in 2020 unless we too harness the power of social media like Trump harnessed it in 2020." If we do not already have a plan in place for the same type of Facebook campaign that won Trump the white House we are doomed. Trump's people ran 7 million Facebook ads, Hillary ran 66,000. This needs to be a high dollar, high tech, AI and big data driven campaign and the Dems need to play offense this time.

23. Similar but not the same

CA knew where on Facebook to target racist rubes. Trump can’t rely on those rubes alone anymore because of the simple law of attrition. Also the fact only a moron believes unconfirmed and wacky Facebook articles targeting right-wing rubes.

Like a Trump rally, those on Facebook are there for the Trump pep rallies. And everyone else around them has moved off of Facebook or away from them on Facebook. But mostly OFF of Facebook.

Like Twitter, Facebook stock will face a rude awaken8ng.

28. Not all rubes

Everyone falls for Facebook ads, not just the rubes. In fact, the group most likely to believe fake stories about Hillary weren't even Trump voters, they were Bernie fans.

This technology has gone beyond mere propaganda and into the realm of cyber warfare and mind control. Most governments consider the type of technology that Cambridge Analytica unleashed on US voters to be a type of weapon that only the military should use. They had a 5000 data point profile of every voter in the country, that profile represented as complete of a psychological profile of each voter as has ever been assembled. They were able to use an AI to analyze the data and target each voter with the type of micro ads they knew would change their behavior at the voting booth. And Trump reinforced it all, his rants were in lock step with the micro ads.

This group is no longer called Cambridge Analytica, but they've taken their show on the road and are flipping elections all over the globe. They've not lost to my knowledge yet.

And it will be more advanced this time. They targeted just the right voters in 2016, the election was decided by about 70,000 voters in WI, MI, and PA. They know that Trump has 40% locked up with his Deplorables, those aren't the target, his targets are the few million people who are on the fence. And it will expand beyond Facebook even more.

These tools are so powerful, that I guarantee ever DU poster has incorrect assumptions about at least 1 or 2 things related to Hillary Clinton. This stuff worked even on Hillary voters who stood by her. Unless the Dems have just as advanced of a Data campaign, it will be an uphill struggle.

The Family - (remember in 2009 when Jeff Sharlett was on Keith Obermann a lot?) when the book came out there were two huge scandals that buried his book - on purpose - deflect whenever you can) about how the Christian Taliban/Mafia operates in DC.

The Great Hack is how they use Data against us and uses those introvert vs extrovert type "quizzes" on FB. They were developed by psychologists at Cambridge University and then weaponized by Bannon et al, who is now in France to teach Europeans how to further weaponize that data. The CEO of CA is an out and out sociopath.

We are at a pivotal moment. Each individual will have to choose: will you fill with loving kindness, compassion, enlightenment; or will you choose to close down into selfishness, hatred, greed.

The choice is ongoing, but we must be firm in commitment. The ignorant just don't know how the system works, and that they are causing their own suffering. They can change. There is no permanent "evil". There is choice.

I felt similar to you, before I watched it, but now I understand the mind control is so blatant and all encompassing on social media, that I will try to get people I can hardly talk to anymore to watch that and discuss it.

We can bring light both in knowledge and kindness to the world, through reform of this mind control, that has unfettered access through the internet. It is an issue we can all unite around, and should.

First post here, been reading for over a decade, thank you to all that have helped me grow into the knowledge of who I am. I wasn't the best at organizing and explaining my thoughts, dyslexia can be a burden in communication sometimes.

This movie does a good job of tying together some of the pieces. This was not advertising or good campaigning, this was beyond propaganda, this was mind control. And it's so so hard to get people to even discuss it, because no one wants to admit that they can be manipulated. But that's not even the point, that one person could be manipulated is immaterial, a population was manipulated.

This is a power we do not fully grasp, and if the Dems don't try to do the same thing they will lose in 2020.

Were hacked, but they don't realize it wasn't only their computers, it was their psyche. It was beyond target marketing in a broad demographic, but also personal information was individually sourced, categorized, and personalized to infiltrate personal feelings AND actions.

It was clearly information weaponized as stated in the movie to cause reactive movement both physically and emotionally. Once everyone realizes this is far more intrusive than any WW11 propaganda machine, we will be able to begin to combat this.

We may have to disconnect from the virtual world, and reconnect socially in person at grass roots levels, like talking about this with your tRump neighbors, family members, friends and community members, and start a chain of direct action by interacting with algorithms by doing, searching reading material you wouldn't normally do or read. To throw them off, so to say...until we can get data and privacy reform.

Thanks Johnny2x2x for making me more aware and concious of my online presence. It was an enlightening movie.

43. Not sure what will work

This is a form of brainwashing, it takes a log time to deprogram brainwashing. What is so powerful about this is that the messages prey on people's detailed emotional profile, and they lead that person to a thought process that leads to a decision that is almost inevitable. The subject thinks they came to this conclusion on their own, that they are awake and thinking for themselves.

The only way I see for the Dems to combat this is to do a form of this themselves. They have to be on top of these messages from the start and counter act them immediately. Without equally sophisticated methods, this election will go the wrong way for Dems.

44. Nah. It's just too many humans realizing that soon there's going to be way less space & food.

We are like the over-crowded rats, fighting for resources & positioning for the best spot. And this is just the beginning. I don't think the average person has a clue the scope of change coming down the pike from the heat already in the system.

45. Midnight thoughts. I feel fairly bleak, too. I think the entire human world is about to convulse

It is by no means only the US -- altho since this is our country we bear particular responsibility here and should act on it, and not give up.

It feels like the end of a great cycle in history. If the planet gets as bad as it might, then it will be more like a Kali Yuga.

In 2007-2008 when DU was having fisticuffs over Democratic presidential candidates, with especial venom directed at Barack Obama from certain quarters (who never got over it, seemingly), I remember saying that Obama was only a human being and not the Messiah. But. But, given the Constitutional damage wrought on this country by BushCheney, he represented a chance to begin to rectify things. Only a chance. And if enough Dem/Progressives/Lefts refused to support the Democratic nominee, that chance would disappear for good.

Obama did as well as he could in his two terms in office, given the forces against him. I only dispute one of his decisions (to not go extremely public with Russia's attack on us, and in essence declare war), and have no idea who could have done better in the circumstances. GOP Senators have proven traitorous in all but name.

So here we are today, with his successor being Trump, a madman who has propelled our slide into a non-Constitutional oligarchy and greased the skids. We are not only where I feared we would be, but far worse. This may be the end of our cycle in history as a republic -- and no place else to go.

Despair is not an option. We have choices. This is our own ground.

46. This would explain so much. I havetyhoughtof it, but do not have

a cosmology that accommodates such a view, and most belief systems (like Old Testament Christianity) that would support that reading of the world at this time are an anathema to me.

But I have thought and believe something similar. Something is going on beyond what can be explained by looking logically at historical forces (like immigration) and cultural-psychological forces (repression of emotions, a hatred of change/other, etc.) Even atheists like William Carols Williams saw there was a contest between the destroyers and the light bearers (vid. "Asphodel, that Greeny Flower".

48. That evil has pretty much existed in most of the world

We've acted very badly over the past 20 years (collectively, not individually). Blowback sucks.

60. Aloha Malama Pono

The Hawaii Archipelago is the most remote island chain in the world. It is located more than 1,000 miles away from the next country (Kiribati) and more than 2,000 miles away from the nearest continent (North America).
