He is very anti-war. Called Vietnam immoral. Was against the Iraq war. I had thought he was against Afghanistan, but I'm not finding anything on that currently. He did not want the US to be the world's policeman. He calls himself too individualistic to be right or left politically. He says he's very liberal on civil rights. He is pro-choice, supported the ERA and says his views were a fusion of Milton Friedman and Noam Chomsky. He supports marriage equality. He basically said it's no one's business who marries who.
He calls himself a repub because he believes the tax system to be unfair. In other words, he's rich and wants less taxes. The other reason I've heard is that he does not like government regulation.
He's personal friends with both John McCain and Mitt Romney. Both he supported for president. The worse thing he ever said about President Obama was that he felt he was too inexperienced to be president and that he was disappointed in some of the decisions he made. That's it.
We're not going to see a rabid RWer type tonight. I think Clint Eastwood is going to be the token moderate to reach out to the undecideds.
BTW, all of this info is on wikileaks which are supported by individual links. I'm reading too much misinformation on DU about him.

(31,011 posts)His name alone carries it enough to get wide appeal. This is a man that does not need a career boost.

(20,606 posts)How many know he has a movie coming out?
It's definitely part of the publicity bandwagon and will make the tracking numbers on this movie way higher...
Otherwise, I agree with your OP and am glad to see someone talk a little truth about the man.
I won't be watching tonight, but it'll be interesting to see how he is introduced: Ladies and gentlemen, the star of the soon to be released movie (insert movie name here because I'm not an Eastwood fan.)

(31,011 posts)It's been on TV several times that I've seen and has been promoted across the internet.
His name alone carries the movie. He doesn't need a convention to promote it. There might be a trailer at the convention, but it's not going to overshadow Rmoney by any stretch of the imagination.
Besides, Eastwood is doing this because he and Rmoney are friends. Just my opinion. His career has been on solid ground for sometime.
As much as I hate that he's doing this, I love him as an actor and a filmmaker. It's not going to change after tonight unless he pulls out a Paul Ryan type of speech.
if nothing else, it's free publicity for him.
A win-win, you might say.

(8,339 posts)of liars who want to drag women back to the 14th century, I am obliged to hate his fucking guts. None of his stances mean a thing if he goes to their convention. His attendance implies endorsement.

(33,556 posts)but like all rich Republicans, he ONLY cares about his fucking money. Not about the civil rights of others, not about a woman's right, not about affordable healthcare, not about the separation of church and state.
Only lowering his fucking taxes.
Shame on him.

(31,011 posts)People have different political stripes that don't fit into one mold. Obviously, you and a few other expect someone to fit in your mold. It's an all or nothing type of philosophy that is overly rigid.
Our Dem party doesn't think that way. Mainly because they know that we have to reach out to all of those of political stripes. It's how you win elections.
Why do you think Eastwood is there in the first place? The repubs have an offensive plank, but they still know they have to reach out to independents and undecideds.

(20,899 posts)Little, if anything, in the GOP platform, agenda, or Ryan's budget is short of being extreme and is therefore a vice and inherently evil imo for lagniappe.

(272 posts)...And will continue to do so!
Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and many countless other great actors are strong, proud liberals, so if Clint, and some other actors hold Conservative values, than so be it... Not a big deal...
Having said all that, I'm still hoping the Democrats and the President come out full-on swinging next week, and really HAMMER the Repubs!!! No time to be soft... This election will probably be a lot closer than it should be.........

Eastwood's early view of Obama emphasized the superficial. "I loved the fact that Obama is multi-racial. I thought that was terrific, as my wife is the same racial make-up."
"On the issues, Eastwood has, at least publicly, tilted more left than right: though he's occasionally described himself as fiscally conservative, he's staunchly pro-choice, pro-gay-marriage, and (especially) pro-environment. Indeed, if anything, his political ambivalence seemsand this will come as no surprise to anyone who's ever seen a Clint Eastwood moviemore attitudinal than policy-oriented. "

(15,774 posts)I could say the same for Robert Duvall. I can deal with an honest difference of opinion and a thoughtful discussion on policy. I don't pledge allegiance to an ideology or a party. I tend to believe the old school Democrats got it right, but there have been a few good GOP presidents, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and the last...Ike Eisenhower.

(5,066 posts)He's very unlikely to say much about Obama. If he does It will less extreme than most others.
Eastwood Is likely to speak about Romney and try to help Romney come off as moderate. He publicly endorsed Romney for one major
reason.Taxes and wanting his Taxes low.He donated money to Mccain but did nothing publicly to help him.The only previous
Republican he has supported was Nixon In 1972.
In early 1993 he admitted to voting for Perot In 1992,and wasn't wild about Bush In 2000.In 2003 he reportly offered Gray Davis his
help to survive recall.
He's not Chuck Norris. He's republican we can agree on some things.
Eastwood said he enjoyed seeing obama's rise and called him his president but said he hasn't picked the right advisors to make
decsions. One of the hollywood republicans who have been the nicest to Obama.
