They are leaving for six weeks???

Talk about "bad optics". My beloved Democratic Party is screaming about a Russian invasion of our election system and corruption in the Trump administration and they're leaving town? The only possible thing people can take from this is that things are not near as bad as we think they are. The sentinels have abandoned the gates. To me, you don't leave the center of government when the government is in crisis. What happens now? do we hold off on all the court actions to compel witnesses to testify until September? And then, are we going to ask a court with a straight face to expedite matters?

We are either facing a crisis, or we're not. Don't tell me that these people need a vacation. There are millions of people in this country who haven't had a vacation in years. Don't tell me that they have to go back home to "connect" with their constituents, they can do that on the weekends. Pelosi says they need to have a stronger case for impeachment...tell me just how you're going to do that with nobody in Washington to do it.

In case you haven't got my point yet...I think this is a terrible, terrible mistake and it just may be a fatal one when, years from now, we are sifting through the ruins of our democracy.

1. "Recess" is not a vacation. Many members of congress will be raising funds, holding town halls,

marching in parades and doing behind-the-scenes policy research during this time. Different members use this time at different levels of efficiency, of course.

Don't tell me that they have to go back home to "connect" with their constituents, they can do that on the weekends.

Oof, that's pretty tough the further you go west. If that were the model, we'd have members of Congress leaving on Thursday morning to "get back home" and coming back on Monday night. Flying is such a huge part of global warming, this is really not a great idea.

Pelosi says they need to have a stronger case for impeachment...tell me just how you're going to do that with nobody in Washington to do it.
Go to your senators' and reps' local offices, or call them, and tell them you want impeachment. That's part of making a stronger case for it -- hearing from constituents.

3. A historically long 46 days.....

Speaking of August recess, the House's upcoming 46-day summer break is historically long, and could seriously decrease the chance Dems eventually move to impeach President Trump, writes the WashPost's Paul Kane.

"Filling that void became more important after Wednesday’s testimony from Robert S. Mueller III landed without much drama."
"Even Democrats who viewed Mueller’s appearances positively now think that they have to work extra hard to build public support for beginning impeachment."

Why it matters: "Some Democrats had hoped that Mueller’s testimony would have been compelling enough to create a liberal echo to the 2009 August recess, when conservative activists flooded town halls to oppose the emerging Affordable Care Act and other large-spending items from the early days of the Obama administration."

4. *sigh* They aren't on vacation, they are in recess.

They will be back in their districts meeting with constituents. This would be a good time to contact your representative directly, go to a town hall, let them know what you think, right to their face - which would be far more constructive than whining on an internet message board.
