Meghan McCain knocks Lindsey Graham for defending Trump's tweets: 'This is not the person I used to know'
BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 07/15/19 01:32 PM EDT
The View co-host Meghan McCain on Monday criticized her fathers longtime friend Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for standing by President Trump after Trump suggested that a group of non-white progressive congresswomen "go back" to where they came from.
McCain called Trump's remarks old, racist dog whistles and said she was embarrassed by the lack of Republicans leaders speaking out against the president. Whatever is happening to Lindsey, this is not the person I used to know, the conservative commentator said.
McCain, the daughter of late Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), has previously described Graham as like an uncle to me and the closest to my political ideology.
The ABC talk show host also played a 2015 clip of Graham, now one of the presidents fiercest supporters, calling Trump a race-baiting xenophobic religious bigot" who didn't represent his Republican Party.

(11,728 posts)Graham has not fundamentally changed, he is just more open about his scorn for non-White, non-wealthy people. The fact is that conservatives support an explicitly racially biased ideology. They support a hierarchy based on the social norms of the past which are the social norms based on White Supremacy. Graham as a conservative supports that even though he and others have sought to hide it in the very coded language that Trump as eschewed.
Trump is not speaking in "dog whistles" he has lifted that veil and is speaking in explicitly racist language without actually using the most identifiable racial slurs. He has forced the Republican Party to choose a side and they have chosen to support his racism.

(82,849 posts)Trump totally represents the Republican Party with his race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigotry. Graham appears to have come to terms with that, and decided he's just fine with it. If you stick with the GOP, Meghan, it doesn't matter what you say, you've signed on for all of it.

(424 posts)leaders needed to stand up and speak out like they need to now. Maybe this is exactly who Graham has been all along, just wasn't front and center like today.
