Tom Toles- Disappearing act

In other news, the Arctic ice is melting away, reaching record lows. The GOP conventioneers in Tampa will not mention this. Neither will most of the 15,000 “news” personnel there to cover the newslessness.

How did the Republicans pick Tampa? It’s a swing district in a swing state! And swing states are seen as important, unlike Arctic ice. Could we move the whole convention onto a shrinking iceberg? Could you fit all 15,000 “news” people on there too? No, we can’t do that. That wouldn’t be serious. “Serious” is a convention that cannot see the missing ice in the Arctic from their living room.

The polar bears stand there, watching the ice disappear. But what can they do? They are just dumb bears, unlike people. People are smart enough to understand dynamic systems and our impact on them. So we don’t stand just stand there watching the ice disappear. We stand around in Florida NOT watching the ice disappear. A hurricane was spotted going by, but that’s somewhere else now. Now we can get back to nominating a guy running for president who knows climate change is a real threat to the planet but is proudly accepting the nomination of a party which won’t let him do anything about it. That might be news, but not if you’re not looking at it.
