The first, Birdie, told the story of an ex-convict who now lives on the streets, selling fruit and devoting himself to the care of his two dogs. The other, Karollyne, detailed the truly amazing story of a trans woman who is the matriarch of a homeless family that squats in an abandoned building and cares for dozens of dogs, cats, monkeys and other animals most of whom were cruelly abandoned by people who drove the unwanted animals to the forest and dumped them.
Last year, inspired by these examples, David and I resolved that we would tap into this uniquely powerful bond and use it to create a new model for providing support for both the homeless population and the animals they care for. We developed a plan for a new type of animal shelter, one that does not yet exist anywhere in the world.
The core idea is that the animal shelter will perform many of the functions of traditional shelters: rescue animals in need, provide them medical care and work to place them with suitable families for adoption. We also intend to launch a public campaign to encourage animal adoptions, and create a centralized website for people who lose their animals and people who find animals to access one another.

(5,167 posts)I know Rio. I go there often.
I have seen the urban homeless with their dogs.
For them, is a virtual street battle for survival since there is a downward spiral of decline in all social programs due to current politics.
The once popular spay and neuter programs at no cost has gone away.
The city sweeps the streets at times taking the homeless to depots for temporary shelter and medicine and forcing the homeless to abandon their dogs.
These dogs run crazy in the street looking for their owners.
The dogs are desperately searching for the only person they have trusted and will never find again.
There are no state supported animal shelters, that idea does not exist.
Instead the few charities that attempt to establish a physical location are taxed enormously by the government. No breaks for an animal charity.
This is a great idea, but it is not in place.
If it does exist at a minuscule existence, it will not take care of the ocean of despair living a short life and dying daily on the streets.
God help them, please.
Me.
