Mitt Romney's eldest sister, who has backed prominent Democrats for office and is Tampa showing support for her brother, had some reassuring words Wednesday for women concerned about the Republican Party's hard line on abortion.
Mitt Romney would never make abortions illegal as president, Jane Romney said when National Journal asked her about the subject after a "Women for Mitt" event. "He's not going to be touching any of that," she said. "It's not his focus."

And I will nominate judges who know the difference between personal opinion and law. It is long past time for the Supreme Court to return the issue of abortion back to the states by overturning Roe v. Wade.

(31,464 posts)I'm sure my sister would say wonderful things about me, too, if asked.
All I'm concerned about are his actions. He flip flops like a landed trout. One position one day, another position the next. The truth is, Mitt will do whatever he has to on any given day in order to "close the deal." If that means he has to sign a ban on abortion in order to get his tax rate reduced, he'll do it in a heartbeat. A heartbeat from a man with no heart...or soul.

(2,940 posts)Your brother clearly changes his views on this and other issues depending on whichever view is most politically expedient at the time he is espousing it. Add to that the make-all-abortions-illegal party platform and running mate, and you'll have to forgive me for calling your bullshit.

(4,442 posts)There are a LOT of people who will hear that and then question their vote for ol' Mitt if his own sister is saying he has no interest in shutting down abortions.

(2,940 posts)I initially thought of this from my pro-choice point of view, but you're absolutely right that the pro-"life" set won't appreciate this.

(24,406 posts)However, assuming that a Republican Congress follows him in (perish the thought), what will he do when they present him with anti-choice bills or bills defunding Planned Parenthood? What kind of people will he nominate for SCOTUS? Republicans will demand clearly anti-choice nominees.
