Having Dolan say the closing prayer at the DNC is a mistake

I'd bet anything he'll include a pro-life message in it. He doesn't stand for the things in our platform. In fact, he actively opposes civil rights for the GLBT community and women's rights.

It's fucked up.

If it is a mistake, it is a well-practiced one.

(NOTE: I know what you mean by mistake and, of course, I agree. I am just pointing out that it is no accident.)

So what if he's pro-life, opposes GLBT rights and women's rights? This is a big tent party and we can still look at Dolan as a Progressive - even if he is progressing in a direction that is, well, distasteful to some.

Don't ask Democrats what they stand for. That's tantamount to demanding that we march in lock-step.

4. I can think of a whole list of Democrat's who are probably very relieved. I'm not on of them.

Considering Rick Warrens involvement in 2009, this does bother me a little. On the other hand, I trust the President, so we'll see...

he is appealing to independents. I know we are proud to be his base, but it is independents who win elections. He can't win an election without his base, but he also can't win without the independents either.

but that aside, I don't see that this move can gain indies. It's likely to backfire.

It will indeed backfire. We should just let him mumble his meaningless words to the invisible skyfather without comment or inappropriate gestures.

Most independents I encounter tend to be Libertarian-leaning and want religion OUT of government. They don't care who marries whom, and don't want politicians poking around our bedrooms.

This is Rick Warren all over again -- exactly how did THAT benefit Obama (and Democrats in general)? I'll answer: It didn't. Bishop Gene Robinson would have been a stellar choice. Any of the Nuns on the Bus would have been a better choice. WE set the narrative, not some asshole who opposes choice and marriage equality. Democrats need to take a FUCKING stand and stop appealing to the wishy-washy middle.
