I have gone out of my way to make sure that my Twitter presence is non-confrontational and have tried to cross divides in a civil manner.
However, I tweeted this evening in reaction to Tomi Lahren's disrespectful commentary on Jimmy Carter and found my account suspended literally within seconds of tweeting for "inciting violence."
Inciting violence? My tweet simply said I couldn't remember ever being made this angry by a stupid bimbo. I'll plead guilty to sexist language, but where that incites violence I am at a loss. Especially given the vitriol spewing forth from our POTUS.*
As we post insightful tweets to DU, please keep in mind that the overall platform is no better than any other social media outlet.

(24,653 posts)I left them awhile ago. As soon as my Twitter access is restored I am deactivating and leaving that behind me as well.
Never one second regretted my decision to leave Facebook. Doubt being twitter less will destroy my either.

(52,181 posts)second, twitter obviously has algorithms to implement their rules, and those algorithms couldn't possibly be perfect or even remotely as good as du's human-intensive system.
their algorithm likely detected words like "anger" and "stupid" and "bimbo" in the same tweet and decided it fit into their general algorithm for finding "inciting violence" tweets and acted accordingly. if you're designing an algorithm for that, saying "if a post has both words of anger or hatred as well as words of sexism or bigotry then deem it as inciting violence" isn't a terrible rule.

(24,653 posts)My guess is that someone reported my tweet and clicked on the option for inciting violence. Twitter accepted that as fact and suspended my account as a consequence without actually putting their own human eyes on it first to verify the complaint was accurate. That fits what I have seen with other suspensions.
Twitter clearly has no algorithms for detecting and addressing sexist words like bimbo. They allow that and far worse routinely.

(14,951 posts)"IF YOU'RE A STAR, THEY LET YOU DO IT."
That's what Trump said to Billy Bush, and that is what Twitter has adopted as their new method for enforcing their so-called Terms of Service: if you have enough followers, they won't remove your tweets or suspend your account. No amount of massaging of the algorithm or warning labels makes up for the fact that Twitter specifically, and with a great deal of forethought and hand-waving, has decided that they WILL NOT ENFORCE THE TOS on the powerful and popular that they enforce on everyone else.
If you use Twitter, alongside the mass of new information, access to new communities of like-minded people, quicker communication, breaking news, etc that you may see as the useful upside, you are also enabling the entrenchment of the US oligarchy. Their voice will not be silenced, yours will. Because they already have a large voice, they are deemed worthy of being heard, and you are not. Perverse, isn't it?
