Than they are about rape?
I've heard far more about soap and toothbrushes than I ever heard about this:

(90,761 posts)Or, for some, if they will admit torture took place, they exclaim it to be something so uncharacteristic for America that it's best to simply not hold anyone accountable (because we are going to do better I was told) and move along as if all is right in the world. Because, they claimed, prosecutions would divide the country.
Never mind that anyone with an ounce of sense knew the lack of prosecutions would bring something worse down the line - and sooner rather than later.
Well, it's sooner and it's known as Trump.
My country got into bullshit debates on what is and isn't torture - because that was easier to focus on than the torture and the guilty and what that means - what that actually requires for a country that truly believes and acts on the thinking that such things as torture aren't consistent with the American character.
Well, the lack of prosecutions and the determination to pretend it was all so long ago in the past that it doesn't matter prove it is very consistent with the American character.
Because that's how America likes to deal with all its crimes against humanity.
Long ago and far away and lots and lots of denial.
But until a little time passes to push that bullshit, the time is filled with bullshit debates about what is and isn't torture. If slavery was all that bad or if America has already paid the price for it - rather than actually deal with the decades upon decades consequences of slavery and racism. Consequences still ruining the lives of people today.
Debates on what is and isn't a concentration camp - far easier than doing something about what is happening to those kids and to their families.
It is outrageous to deny children detained in already horrible condition basic sanitary products - it is more outrageous that they face repeated assault, both physical and sexual. And PSA: anyone facing repeated assaults - physical or sexual - IS BEING TORTURED.
But it is easier to focus on the lack of soap - they can be sent soap. But who is going to hold those responsible for kidnapping, rape, physical abuse, negligent deaths, children forever lost to their families, (illegal) adoption of children taken from their family for trumped up reasons?
If war criminals (the Bush admin/plus many, many more), guilty of torture, rape, and murder are allowed to walk free - even praised now by far too many....
Anyone really think America is going to do anything about the crimes against humanity Trump has put into motion?
But what do I know? I'm still angry about the way the Bush Administration was allowed to walk free. I'm still disgusted by their war crimes. And the hits just keep coming.
My level of disgust hasn't abated any... it has only gotten more intense.

(28,136 posts)I don't recall hardly a word about the rampant sexual assault yet toothbrushes and soap are in our face.
All of it's horrible to be clear.
