there is a problem with farm machinery not receiving software updates. The farmers are forced to transport their equipment to the nearest dealer, which can cost thousands of dollars and days of lost work.

Some, however, are paying hackers in, IIRC, an Eastern Bloc country for proprietary updates. Don't have time to look it up, but there's a fascinating YouTube video about John Deere equipment specifically.

with Deere's Green System. The Farm Kids are Hacking the heck out of it and some are replacing it with a Agco-allis-Trition off the shelf product which is far more user friendly.

Deere went after several Farmers for messing with their software and got there lunch handed to them. More and more Deere owners are modifying their systems to suit there needs.
