FDA advises cosmetics recall over asbestos after outcry from Dingell, Tlaib

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced it’s advised retailers Beauty Plus and Claire’s to recall makeup that tested positive for asbestos, a carcinogen.

At a March congressional hearing, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib expressed outrage at companies marketing the allegedly unsafe products at young girls, saying, “It shook me.”

That month, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn) introduced legislation requiring that all cosmetics marketed to children to contain a warning label that the product has not been evaluated for asbestos contamination.

“Asbestos in children’s cosmetics is simply unacceptable. It is so basic we shouldn’t need legislation to ban it but we do,” said Dingell in a Friday statement. “Yet again, retailers like Claire’s and Beauty Plus are removing products from their shelves after asbestos was found in their cosmetics. This so despicable; all of us need to be outraged. Congress must pass strong legislation so all cosmetics – especially cosmetics marketed toward children – contain proper warning labels alerting people of dangerous toxins.”
