Now the pastor will get a deluge of hate from Trump’s base. Especially the Christian base. I feel sorry for him and for the congregation. There’s no winning in this one.

Trump had just finished golfing and was driven in the presidential limo when he or someone in his staff called the Preacher to tell him they were on the way and that they should pray for Trump.

So I ask again, how was he supposed to respond?

Too bad he wasn’t fast enough to think on his feet to take advantage of the situation to insult Trump. I’m sure you and others here would have jumped at the opportunity to show Trump what for!

As did my pastor quoted when he was asked to lead prayer for a specific politician, "Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and those which exist are established by God."

My parish often renders unto Caesar on our time, but rarely mistakes Caesar for a sacred cow.

The pastor didn’t endorse Trump, or hold a rally for him. He just prayed for him as he was basically ordered to do.

It seemed like a pretty straightforward reference to the article...

Lunatica "The pastor didn’t endorse Trump"

OP Title: Pastor of VA church apologizes: "I didn't mean to endorse the president...."

Apparently some of the members of his congregation that actually witnessed the event, interpreted it as an endorsement of the president... and the pastor is apologizing for said action and that seems to be what asiliveandbreathe was referring to.

Hopefully that clarifies.

think about or plan what to do.

Usually when a president makes an "unannounced" stop like this at a church, restaurant or elsewhere, it's still planned in advance - at least to the degree that the pastor or manager, etc. is discreetly notified a couple of days in advance that the president MAY stop by and to quietly prepare for it just in case. If there's something they want the people there to do, they also let them know in advance. Rarely does a president just roll up anywhere with no one there knowing he's coming or what's about to happen.

It sounds like here, Trump just showed up with only a few minutes notice. If that's the case, I feel sorry for the pastor because he was put in a terrible position.

Here you are.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/02/politics/trump-virginia-church/index.html

CNN)President Donald Trump on Sunday made an unannounced stop at a church in Virginia in the wake of a mass shooting that left 12 people dead in Virginia Beach.

Judd Deere, a spokesman for the White House, said in a statement, "President Donald J. Trump is visiting McLean Bible Church in Vienna, VA, to visit with the Pastor and pray for the victims and community of Virginia Beach."
The President did not give remarks, and there was no mention of the shooting in Virginia Beach while Trump was at the church.
Trump made the stop at the church following a golf outing at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia.

the pastor was put in by Trump crashing the memorial. The pastor probably expected Trump to say something about the victims. If Trump had done that then maybe people in the congregation wouldn’t have felt hurt.

Obviously Trump pulled a propaganda act without bothering to lament the death of the victims. It was a photo op gone wrong. Very wrong.

and all the jazz, I'm curious why he couldn't attend the whole church service. Guess golfing was more important than God or the victims.
