John W. Garratt, chief financial officer at Dollar General, told investors on a call that the chain was doing everything it could to minimize the impact of tariffs on its customers but he believes "our shoppers will be facing higher price as 2019 progresses."
Dollar Tree Inc.'s stock, which has dipped 3.2 percent this week, rebounded, gaining 3.4% in afternoon trading Thursday. Dollar General's shares rose about 7.4% on Thursday.
"Both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar have a much heavier exposure to very low-income shoppers than Dollar General and these individuals are much more likely to be affected by inflation, leading to possible reductions in the amount they buy," wrote Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail in a report Thursday. "This has the potential to clip sales volumes and growth. "

(18,837 posts)I'm not kidding. If this happens, the local Facebook pages will be ablaze. Don Jr and Eric have made frequent visits there for stump speeches and always get a heroes' welcome. If they stop by again, I can guarantee they will be asked why the Dollar Store is now the Dollar and a Quarter Store.

(11,282 posts)So when i buy 5 items and it comes to $5,50 instead of $5.00, do the Chinese pay that extra 50 cents right at the register?

(2,120 posts)When the container full of Chinese goods valued at $100K, and assessed a 10% tariff, enters and then clears Customs at the Port of Long Beach, who do you think writes and signs a check to the US Treasury in the amount of $10K?
And don't try the old "They'll pass it all on to the consumer" dodge until you read the wiki article on Price Elasticity of demand and explain how it doesn't apply in this case. ( No, they CAN'T always pass it all along to the consumer, and those that believe they can have never progressed beyond ECON 101.)
yes, a tariff is a type of tax on a product, but it is only paid by the consumer if they (the consumer) demand it.

(89,247 posts)sizes at places like target , walmart, large grocery stores.
if you plan to eat the whole thing it's a better deal at those stores i mention above.
but for many after a while they will just throw it a way. in that case the smaller sizes at dollar tree are a good deal.

(8,231 posts)a hummingbird feeder. I mail her gifts from the Dollar Tree since she is basically a shut in living far away.
I buy cards to send her 10 for a dollar. I just bought these wonderful brownie bites from 'mr brownie' ...made with no palm oil and no trans fats for her (and myself). I can go on and on about all the GREAT things I've snagged there.
I'm glad you don't need to shop there but some of us really need it. It's also obvious you don't shop there by your comment.

(38,310 posts)You could consistently find things like name brand motor oil there. Four quarts of oil and an oil change kit for five bucks.
Five bucks would also buy a fairly decent meal for a family with kids.
Inflation has severely limited dollar store inventories.

(38,958 posts)And that will be much more obvious at the lower price points that such stores operate at. I like Dollar Tree for greeting cards and a few hobby related items such as the pack of sandpaper that is a really good deal, but most of their stuff is easy to pass up.

(18,837 posts)...Trump will simply pass a luxury yacht relief passage so that luxury yacht owners are not affected.
He'll do it under the cover of another cabinet "resignation" (firing), or the Kim "Summit" III, or he'll bash John McCain again, or he'll make another misogynistic statement about a woman,or he'll mock another disabled individual. He will have some bright shiny object to wave in front of the media so that no one will notice when he signs off on a much-needed relief package to ease the suffering of millionaires and billionaires.
And what bothers me the worst about what I just wrote is that in any other presidency, it would have come from The Onion, or Borowitz, or it would be just one more tinfoil hat theory.
Today, Trump's already pulled that little maneuver countless times. It's a standard item in his playbook.

(20,174 posts)They've expanded their selection, but now everything just ends in 99 cents ($1.99, 2.99 etc). Dollar Tree is still my go to for kitchen items, personal care etc. Of course, the wholesale cost (including tariff) is only part of the total cost of running a store. Even a 25% tariff shouldn't cause everything to go up to $1.25.

Yes, much of their stuff is made overseas. Guess what? So is the more expensive stuff you buy at any department store.
