Trump Staff Dreads Traveling Overseas With Toddler President (Jonathan Chait, NY Mag)

Chait's column, which is based on an article from CNN:

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/trump-staff-dreads-flying-air-force-one-with-toddler-president.html

Trump won’t stop watching television. The screen-addicted president just keeps doing what he does at home, which is binge-watch TV for hours and get angry. The difference is that, on the plane, they can’t get away:

-snip-

Trump won’t go to sleep. The president and First Lady are the only passengers equipped with lie-flat beds. Despite this, Trump resists his staff’s attempts to get him to go to sleep. Trump “will hold court for hours on end, despite staffers encouraging him to join first lady Melania Trump in the private cabin and get some rest,” the story notes. “He will not go to sleep,” reports a source. Unfortunately, Trump is well past the age at which pediatricians recommend sleep-training.

Trump does not like the TV in other countries. When he lands, rather than meet with foreign leaders, Trump heads straight to his hotel. He often complains about the lack of familiar television channels. “After he discovered to his displeasure on an early foreign trip that his beloved Fox News was not available in his foreign hotel, the White House Communications Agency arranged for a streaming service that would allow him to keep up with his favorite programs,” reports CNN. “He typically asks for multiple televisions in his room, depending on the size of the space, one source said.”

Trump also does not like the food in foreign countries. “Host governments worked to avoid presenting the President with food that might seem challenging, such as fish with the head still attached.” It probably seems unfair to Trump that he has to travel to all these different countries when none of them can make a hamburger as good as the ones he gets at home.

Trump does not like it when people are talking about non-Trump subjects. He is known to love meetings set up by foreign dictators that make him the subject of elaborate displays of flattery. (Trump “prefers trips where he is the guest of honor instead of the large summit meetings that comprise chunks of any US president’s calendar.”) He hates meeting with other democratically elected leaders, where he will have to listen to what other people want and possibly negotiate boring policy questions. (“At the yearly G7 and G20 gatherings, Trump has felt ganged up on by other leaders, according to administration officials.”)

Inside Trump's Air Force One: 'It's like being held captive'

-snip-

"It's like being held captive," one official said of traveling with the President on Air Force One.

Current and former officials have described White House trips as grueling endeavors accompanied by long hours, but several privately said the flights overseas are easily the worst. The duration can stretch nearly 20 hours. Sleeping space is limited. The televisions are streaming Fox News constantly. And if the headlines flashing across the bottom of the screen are unfavorable to their boss, aides know it's time to buckle up for a turbulent ride.

The President boards Air Force One Friday for the 14-hour flight to Tokyo, and his staff is gearing up for a particularly hellish ride. An event the previous day was supposed to focus on relief for farmers who have been hurt by tariffs, but it quickly devolved into a venting session for Trump, who called the Democratic House speaker "crazy" and said Democrats were trying to inflict a "thousand stabs" on him.

-snip-

This account is based on interviews with five current and former officials who have traveled with the President on Air Force One. Trump is expected to notch 36,000 miles of travel this summer, including two trips each to Japan and Europe.

1. He probably kicks the back of the seat in front of him, demands ice cream

and insists on being taken to the bathroom just when the grownups have started to eat their meals.

Then they can write books about the pain after he’s defeated in 2020.

39. Thank God for the rest of the world not forced to be on flights with him.

Having to lower himself to fly on Air Force One, he should only have to deal with his sycophants.

3. Yet they go on with this maniac.

How do people who are expected to grovel and kiss his ample ass as they had to yesterday in the oval office, live with themselves?

It's disgusting.

6. I've been wondering that for a long time.

If they hate being awakened so Trump can hold court on AF1, they could just say, "Sorry, I'm sleeping. I'll talk to you in the morning." And if he fires them, BFD - maybe they can make some money writing another book about how much it sucks to work for Trump.

4. Poor babies!

Are their families being held incommunicado or something? Are they being threatened if they talk? Unless they're going on the record, this is just gossip and rumor, no matter how pleasing it is to hear that Trump's an insufferable boss. If it's not an honorable job to work in the White House anymore, then QUIT.

So fed up with this infantile whining about what a hardship post the White House is. The media, starting with Joe Scarborough and Jonathan Chait, need to quit giving space to people too chicken to stand up for themselves. What is the viewing and reading public supposed to do about it? Unless these whiners say, "And you can quote me!" just file their carping away for an amusing little anecdote you can share at a cocktail party. Maybe somebody there will appreciate these anecdotes.

7. Reminds me of that famous "Twilight Zone" episode.

The one with the evil little kid in charge of what's left of the world---everyone watches what the kid wants to see on TV, eats what the kid wants to eat, etc. etc. etc.

How in Gods name did we ever get into this nightmarish situation? And what the hell are we going to do about it?

15. Two things just happened: Nancy Pelosi "prays for an intervention" by family, staff, Congress...

That's pretty serious, not just tit-for-tat insults.

The second is that Joe Scarborough, the mouthpiece of mouthpieces, said this morning that several GOPers have told him sotto-voce that they fear Trump is "pre-dementia," which is clearly a euphemism for senile and losing ground fast.

It's now moved off discussion boards and into a very public sphere.

that I think tRump is going to really go crazy now (all the judges ruling against him, etc) and she said she thinks he has started to spiral down already and this is snowballing. She worked in a mental hospital for several years so hopefully she's right.

With toy tweeter. I don't feel a lick of sympathy for anyone in his orbit who doesn't have to be there. Hope he gives them hell. Does anyone remember George Perot's Wild Kingdom? They would sometimes have to shoot the large animals with tranquilizer guns to relocate them, or fix their wounds. Maybe that's what they need. Playpen and a tranquilizer dart gun.

There’s another possibility: the walls and door to their private quarters may not be soundproof. Staff may be able to hear some really bizarre noises. Raised voices, breaking glasses/dishes, spanking, crying, and other sounds too graphic to list here.
