A healthy dog was euthanized so it could be buried with its owner

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/22/us/dog-buried-with-owner-trnd/index.html

Emma, a healthy Shih Tzu mix, was euthanized to fulfill her late owner's dying wish that the dog be put down -- and then laid to rest with her.

The dog arrived at the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter in Chesterfield, Virginia, on March 8 after her owner's death, where she stayed for two weeks. During that time, the shelter was in contact with the executor of the dead woman's estate trying to keep the dog alive.

"We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions, because it's a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home," said Carrie Jones, manager of Chesterfield Animal Services told CNN affiliate WWBT.

On March 22, the executor of the owner's estate came to the shelter to get the dog, a spokeswoman for the Chesterfield County Police told CNN. The shelter again offered to have the dog signed over and be adopted out, but the executor declined.

Emma was then taken to a local veterinarian, euthanized and taken to a pet cremation center in Richmond, Virginia, WWBT reported. Her ashes were placed in an urn and returned to the representative of the woman's estate.

1. Humans suck. If I were a vet, I'd refuse.

6. It's likely some vets had refused and the "executor" (executioner in this case) had to shop around

to find one who would euthanize that poor little dog.

4. That's tragic. Shame on Emma's owner.

If that woman believed in an afterlife that our pets share, then she should have believed they'd eventually be reunited.

If that woman didn't believe in an afterlife, then she deprived Emma and Emma's new owner(s) of possibly years of happiness here.

7. So sad

Wouldn’t tufts of the dog’s hair have served the purpose of being “together?” How selfish, and I’m sure as hell glad it wasn’t my vet who did it, because I would have to find a new vet.

I feel terrible for the shelter folks who did their best. I wish they could have swapped the dog out for one who was suffering with terminal cancer or something.

8. That's sick

Every vet they tried to use should have said no.

Having had to euthanize pets who were terminal, I know how that loss feels. To learn that it was done to a healthy dog makes me sick. What despicable people.

9. I have mixed emotions on this one.

It depends on the relationship between the two of them. I say this because my uncle had a dog that was so devoted to him it would have been a kindness to put him down when Uncle Fritz passed.

They lived across the road from me out in the country. The dog would wait for the mail carrier and take the mail to Fritz. After Uncle died the dog wouldn't allow any one to touch him. Wouldn't eat. Waited by the mailbox and delivered the mail to Fritz's chair o the front pourch. When the mail stopped he howled most of the day. Finally the county sent a deputy to deal with "a feral dog" that wouldn't let anyone on the property. You can imagine it didn't end well.

Would have been so much better if Butch and Fritz shared that hole in the ground.

17. The shelter personnel had this dog for a long enough time

to properly evaluate him. They thought he was a good candidate for a new home.

20. Exactly. A cute small dog is usually highly adoptable, and the place that had the dog for two weeks

was saying that the dog could be adopted easily.

12. Here's the Veterinarian's Oath, adopted by the American Veterinary Medical Association ...

..."Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.

I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics. I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.
"

How euthanizing a healthy animal even remotely lines up with any of the above is beyond me...

Rename that precious pooch and euthanize one that comes in terminal - switch the records and certify the poor puppy's passing.

15. No veterinarian I know (and there's lots) would agree to this.

Our main vet would advise the executor to get mental health aid. I hope the "owner" is rotting in flames.

Seems they would have no trouble finding new owner for the dog.
