1. No; he had a very lucrative private law practice at Kirkland & Ellis. He didn't need a job.

He probably took a large pay cut to come to work for Trump, so his motivation remains a mystery.

2. He might have a similar motivation as Lindsey Graham ... Kompromat

Which is not terribly different than what Trump's buddies at the National Enquirer did with stories they buried.
I suspect they got to Rosenstein as well.

It is their modus operandi going back to Sally Yates' concern about Flynn and the Steele dossier.

4. His motivation is transparent.

He wants to save Trump's presidency, because he values the GOP's grip on power, and he believes he knows how to do it.

There's no Kompromat, or promise of lucrative payoff down the line. He's a true believer and party loyalist. He's doing it to stop Dems.

5. That's what I suspect - I don't think the Russians are behind him.

The fact that he sent a long, unsolicited memo to the WH explaining his legal theory about the unitary executive indicates he really wanted the job. It just surprises me that even despite his extreme ideology he'd want to roll in Trump's shit.

7. His law firm works for Alfa Bank in Russia

you know, the one that communicated with trump towers and Spectrum Health. His son works in the Justice Department and his daughter works in Fin Cen, so they are sucking up all their daddy's crimes into never to be found files.
