The Hollywood Reporter 9 hours ago.. .
Galvanizing conservatives Dinesh DSouza and John Sullivans documentary 2016: Obama's America grossed a stellar $6.3 million as it expanded nationwide over the weekend, beating a trio of three new films.
The anti-Barack Obama film, opening last month in only a few theaters, now boasts a domestic cume of $9.2 million, the top gross of the year for a documentary (excluding nature films). Bully was the previous crownholder with $3.5 million.
Among other records, Obama's America is now the top conservative documentary of all time, beating out Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed ($7.7 million).

(10,715 posts)...on a pretty slow weekend for the business.
on edit - just to add, the article you cite is what is known as a "puff piece", a half-assed attempt to generate buzz. Though I doubt that there are many more people willing to put up money to sit through that swill.

(135,425 posts)Didn't they do that with a Palin film, buy tickets but no one attended?
After all--they do it with their books to make the NYT Best Seller list.
They do it with fake Facebook and Twitter accounts.
They have money to throw around....I would not be surprised in the slightest if they pushed their numbers with free tickets, or bulk purchases of tickets, followed by a shitload of no-shows.

(19,458 posts)This is pure propaganda, and it's sickening. Indie filmmakers work their entire lives to get a film in distribution, and this POS fake documentary, gets shown in regular distribution. SOmeone in the movie industry needs to explain how the fuck this happened.
And yes.. I was at the theatre this weekend, and I know people who work at the theatres, and NO ONE was watching those films. No one. Ghost towns.
