At this point, it's safe to say that the GOP opposes abortion in all instances, including rape and incest. You judge for yourself. My opinion is based on the the Akin quote, and some of these other quotes I've seen floating around DU (below). Total banning of abortion in all instances has become the GOPs de facto, if not their de jure opinion.
While Republicans at the national level were in a hurry to shove him aside, Republican opinion had not hardened against Mr. Akin in Missouri, in part because of the salience of the abortion issue. The congressman is totally, firmly, solidly pro-life, Sharon Barnes, a member of the state Republican central committee, said, adding that Mr. Akin believed that abortion is never an option.
Ms. Barnes echoed Mr. Akins statement that very few rapes resulted in pregnancy, adding that at that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you dont kill it.
Thats more what I believe he was trying to state, she said. He just phrased it badly.

Back in March, Idaho Republican State Senator Chuck Winder sponsored a 'double ultrasound bill,' which would require women to have two ultrasounds before having an abortion, reports Jezebel.com.
The first ultrasound would be free, but women would have to have the procedure performed at a pro-life crisis pregnancy center. If the woman still wanted the abortion, she would have to pay for a second ultrasound.
Winder's 'Double Ultrasound Bill' would also have required two ultrasounds if a woman had been raped, were victims of incest, or in the case of a medical emergency.
At the time, Winder said of the opposition to his bill: Rape and incest was used as a reason to oppose this. I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps, her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage or was it truly caused by a rape. I assume thats part of the counseling that goes on.

First off, Ryan says in response to the question, "should it be legal for a woman to be able to get an abortion if she's been raped," that "the method of conception doesn't change the definition of life." That's right, according to Paul Ryan, rape is apparently just another "method" of getting pregnant

Based on these quotes, and others you, my DU friends, may care to supply, I have a question that now needs to be answered by every lawmaker in America: Yes or no? Should a woman who has been forcibly raped be forced to bear her attacker's baby?

You get the feeling it's like a negotiating ploy. "We really don't want women who are actually raped to have to bear the kids, but if we write the law that way, they'll all use it as a loophole."

(38,613 posts)3. I said once before, I'd love to see a Kitty Dukakis-style debate question on that topic
Ask Romney or Ryan if they would insist on their wives giving birth to their rapist's baby.
It's kind of crappy debate question, but I'm still pissed off that Mike Dukakis was asked such a thing.
