Parliaments petitions website repeatedly crashed as the number of signatures shot up -- fueled by endorsements from singer Annie Lennox, actor Hugh Grant, science broadcaster Brian Cox and comedian David Mitchell.
The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with, the House of Commons petitions committee said on Twitter. Between 80,000 and 100,000 people have been simultaneously viewing the petition, it said, nearly 2,000 signatures are being completed every minute.
...
The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is the will of the people, the text of the petition says. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.
Any petition exceeding 100,000 signatures is eligible for debate by Parliament. Its then up to a special Petitions Committee comprised of rank-and-file lawmakers to decide whether one should be held.

(12,595 posts)Now that people know more about it, it should be voted on again.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)Now that the ramifications have become apparent (and so many of the Brexiteers have inexplicably skedaddled from the scene of their mess), a lot of people seem to be either regretting their vote or regretting sitting out the referendum. To me, it would seem to be the easiest thing for PM May to come out and say that she's holding another vote on Brexit to determine if it truly is the now-better-informed will of the people. If another vote confirms Brexit, then proceed with all possible speed to enact it. But if the people now say, "Wait a second!" then shitcan that earlier 52-48 vote and work out a fresh EU membership agreement.

(90,646 posts)...Democracies. In addition, ask: Who does it serve? Follow the money, because Western democracies have their share of the venal and the greedy.
We also have our fair share of the blissfully stupid. Hint: when you mean stupid say stupid, not retarded. Stupid people choose to be that way. Developmentally delayed people don't have a choice.

What gets me about all this is that the referendum only required a simple majority to pass. I thought that was a bit bizarre.
Having lived nine years in California, I developed an aversion to referendums/ballot initiatives, as the public is usually ill informed (the whole point actually) and we hire people to study issues and legislate full time. If they don't do a good job, we "fire" them. We used to get really thick voters' guides explaining the initiatives, but they were often intentionally confusing and the mailers we received could be extremely deceptive. For instance, they would equate Prop 8 with "freedom of speech" and implied that Barack Obama was in favor of it.

(15,322 posts)they voted for Brexit just to "own the EU", and now, they can't fucking admit that their entire political philosophy is based on "loving someone else's tears".
They don't give ONE FUCK.
Donnie Shit for Brains voters, voted for him because he promised to hurt the people they wanted to see get hurt
Same with the UK leave voters.
You can't reason with these people. They've lost their souls. Cruelty to the "other" is like a drug to them...they'll never give it up. Cruelty is their Moby Dick

(327 posts)I was at a gathering of expats, predominantly Brits, when The Citrus Cyst's inauguration was being televised live.
There was much derision about how on earth US could elect such a fuckwit to the office of POTUS, with one very vocal exception. The Uber-Brexiter in the room started gobbing off about how brilliant tRump would be, and how the US political establishment needed a similar kick in the teeth to Uk's Brexit. The same guy champions every RWNJ politician in Europe.
Many Brexiters also display MAGA in their timelines on Twitter.

(19,972 posts)I don't think most voters had much idea what they were getting themselves into. Like Tusk or somebody said, it was crazy to hold a vote without having a good idea what it would involve or what it would eventually look like. "Anything but more of the same" seems to be driving a lot of voters in a lot of places and that's not a particularly sound plan.
