Remember story of black mother sentenced for enrolling child in the wrong school district?

The story of a black mother who served jail time for using her fatherís address so her two daughters could enroll at a better school gained new attention on social media this week as news of a widespread college admissions scandal broke.

Kelley Williams-Bolar served nine days in jail in 2011 after she was found guilty of using her fatherís address instead of her own in an attempt to have her daughters enroll in a better school district than the Akron, Ohio, one they were slated for, according to HuffPost.

Williams-Bolar was also put on probation for three years and required to complete 80 hours of community service.

"It's overwhelming. I'm exhausted," she said after her sentencing, according to ABC. "I did this for them, so there it is. I did this for them."

Her story resurfaced after more than 40 people were charged in a college enrollment scandal where wealthy parents, including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, paid thousands of dollars to get their children into elite and highly selective colleges.

Several social media users were quick to point out the discrepancy in media attention paid to Williams-Bolarís story compared to that of high-profile Hollywood actresses, pointing out that Huffman and Loughlin should serve jail time as well.

1. To hear the media tell it, only these 2 actresses pulled off this scam.

No mention, especially the young people by name, of any of the male CEOs involved. Where are the names of the coaches and other university administration people who took the payments?

3. Not to worry!

I'm sure Secretary Betsy Devos will give her the opportunity to allow her children to attend whatever school she wants them to attend, providing, of course, she lives in a place that is working to destroy the public school system in order to provide private companies the chance to come in and make their "fair income" from the public funding.
It's not about providing good schools for everyone, it is allowing the "right people" the chance to select where they can go to get away from the "bad" schools.

6. Yeah, I don't think the biggest discrepancy was in media attention...

I think it was in how black mothers are treated versus these high-status white mothers.

7. People use different addresses all the time, for their kids' school.

I never heard of this story or that anyone ever served jail time for it. I thought that as probably a rule, not a law. I guess it's a misdemeanor? Was it that she had a prior conviction, maybe? Or there was a fine, and she couldn't pay it? It doesn't make sense to jail someone for using a different address.

As for the celebrities, they'll serve jail time, I would think. Or at least I hope so. What they did is much more serious. At least for Huffman and Loughlin. They actually paid someone to falsify records, and for a stand-in to take the SATs for their kids. And on top of that, bribed someone at the school. They used a guy who does this for a living.

9. While there is certainly a discrepancy I would be careful here because there is an almost 100%

certainty that the Repugnants and their Russian allies will try to use this as a wedge to influence the public into not trusting the media.
