1. 100% of why this is all happening.

I remember thinking maybe it really is too soon. Hillary first then the Black guy, that too many of us are too fucking stupid and too fucking racist.

Saw a LOT of racism on supposed liberal sites too.

Oh, and just in case someone wants to get cute, I say "Black Guy" having supported him not only by voting for him but working on his campaign and donating.

And "Black Guy" is illustrating how all the racists out there feel about him

I was for Obama. I was nearly kicked off this site for it. There were mass alerts against anyone who supported Hillary and was not afraid to say so. Some good people left and were kicked off. I still miss them.

Don't forget some of the things that were said about Hillary, then and now. Remember who said them. Most of them are still here.

I want a candidate that can win the Electoral College. We had a far left candidate once and he lost big. I don't want a candidate that only some folks support. And I don't want to be attacked for pointing out the obvious.

52. "the electoral college campaign" ought to be addressed.

We should put more time and effort into who those who make up the electoral college are. Shouldn't they be made aware that they were responsible for a dangerously unqualified man becoming POTUS?

Like super delegates, they were the firewall. They acted like kindling.

Skin color and gender were major determining factors for the stupid in 2016. Unless something has changed since then, they still are. It's only gotten worse, IMO.

People love to give the "right" answers on polls but the truth comes out at the real polls come election time.

The truth does not come out at election time; voter suppression, gerrymandering, electronic voting machine "quirks", and voter purges all work to distort the truth.

All that matters is a candidate that can win the Electoral College. It's not who I want or who you want. It's who can beat trump. Our candidate has to appeal to independents and those disgusted with trump and the repubs.

America has a major misogyny problem, it has a major race problem, and a myriad of other problems dealing with marginalized populations. All are "real" problems. Saying one problem is the "real" problem implies that the others are not.

This isn't a power ranking. All of it needs to be addressed.

31. Sheesh, Eliot - I know how you feel.

It’s so disappointing, what happened. I so clearly remember how I felt that night in November 2008. Wow! We’ve gotten over it. America’s finally gotten OVER it. We had finally conquered our racism. W had finally taken a historic step beyond racism. We’ve grown up.” I was so hopeful and so proud of my country. We just proved to the world that we’re bigger, and better, and beyond that old shit.

Well, that didn’t last long. I remember thinking to myself, maybe it’s still too soon. Maybe we dated to think we were ready but then we woke up the next morning...

So disappointing.

Dammit.

46. I was happy. I became emotional, but I never thought "We did it".

It was good that someone closer to me (I'm Latino not Black) was in a position of power. However, I never thought that it was a step beyond racism. I thought it was the first tiny step in the process of addressing racism but I was also worried at the same time, that President Obama would be assassinated because of the deep seated hatred of Black people that is baked into American society.

The main problem that I see is that We Americans have NEVER really taken an honest look at ourselves. We seem to be a nation of paradoxes. On one hand we are industrious and hard working. On the other, we want quick fixes, the one pill that will allow you to lose weight without dieting and exercise. The one app that will control all of your electronics and make everything easy.

We are that way about complex social problems as well. We think that electing women to the Congress means that we are dealing with sexism and misogyny, that electing a Black President means that we have come a long way on race (we actually have made major advances in both) but the problem remains that most Americans who are not women or people of color, do not seem to understand how it is to be one of those historically oppressed groups and that lack of understanding means that any honest discussion of how people are treated and the anger and sadness that treatment causes, is treated defensively and dismissed.

53. imo it is impossible to analyze and assess the reasons for

the current descent and increase in bigotry as long as hate radio and all that racist repetition to 50 mil a week is neither factored nor challenged.

for 30 years it's been a constant source of excuses for racism and memes/talking points like - 'there is no racism' 'there is no white privilege' 'white men are being discriminated against' 'kneeling athletes are traitors' 'mike brown and trayvon martin were thugs' 'dems/obama are letting illegal immigrants into the country and giving them drivers licenses so they can vote' etc and then electing a lot of racists who realized they had to repeat that shit to win GOP primaries.

it's trump that studied talk radio in 2014, coordinated with limbaugh and russians to win the primaries and steal another election. trump took it up a notch by embodying what the dittohead teabags have been hearing for 3 decades.

and a lot of it was to successfully sell voter suppression legislation.

this country will improve quickly when the left's orgs pull their ear buds out and realize that with very little activism they can get the advertising industry to have to ask advertisers if they really want to support trump and global warming denial and racism, apply real market demand to that protected monopoly, and reduce 1500 stations to a few hundred.

as long as the left ignores the only real advantage the racists have, used to divide us and get racists elected, we're fucked as a democracy, polluting and distorting any national discussion on any major issue.

americans have to fix that.

12. Here.

Is it true that on the night of Obama’s inauguration leading republicans promised to obstruct him and make him a one term president?

In 2010, right before the mid-term elections, John Boehner said of Obama’s agenda: “We're going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.” And Mitch McConnell had already said, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

This is completely without any regard for what Obama’s agenda actually was, or what was good for the country (which was in a deep crisis at the time). All they cared about was stopping Obama.

Remember all the investigations of Clinton? Remember the impeachment that caused the majority of Americans to support President Clinton?

It is all about republicans taking power however they can. If Obama hadn't been black, they would have found some other way to attack him.

Racism is just the excuse, it's all about republican policies.

Me thinks you are confused in your response. I don't remember the GOP meeting on a white Presidents Inauguration night to vow to stop him at any cost and declare that they would do anything in their power to make him a one term President. They were then and are now racists.

Hillary was treated far worse, IMO, than Pres Obama was in '08 or '12.

She was treated badly by misogynist assholes, yet not worse than the racists that believe a black man is and always have been nothing more than a slave and far inferior to a white man. Fact is they are on pretty equal footing in some ways. The GOP thinks them both inferior to their white privilege.

38. Because i live & work in the middle of a ton of them. ALL democrats are bad, to them.

Are there racists among them? Of course. Sadly, there are racists EVERYWHERE, even in THIS party, and yes, i did hear a couple of those opinions in '08. But they were far outweighed by those who wished they could have had Condi Rice instead of John McCain. And if you look at polls from that time, Rice polled higher than almost ANY other Republican. A real racist wouldnt vote for a black person, much less a black WOMAN (the HORROR!!), to run "their" country. And in the mid 90s, Colin Powell polled very high as well and could very well have beaten Bush in 2000. Of course, his star has fell off the earth since he came out in support of Pres obama. Oh yes, the racists are out there, but they're not behind every tree like they were 60 yrs ago. Even my late uncle, born and raised & fine with segregation, voted for a black Congressman in the 90s.
As the other poster pointed out, the attacks in the early 90s on the Clinton admin, along with Hillary & the health care task force, were savage. We'll see it again in '20, if kamala Harris isnt the nominee; a total attack on whoever it is. Because to them, the Dems are the end of the country!!

In 2006, my boss at the time had this idea. And when he said it, i thought "holy shit that could work". He wanted Cheney to resign "for health reasons". Bush would pick Condi Rice as his new VP. Everyone knows he loved her. She would have two years as VP to get a ton of media coverage. Then in '08, SHE runs for president. She wouldve been tough to beat in the primaries IMO.

20. We don't know what the republicans did on the night of Clinton's

inaugural, because not much internet back then. Anecdotal evidence - I was speaking to a low level republican operative who worked at the WH right after Clinton was elected and he assured me that Clinton would be a one term president.

And considering all the investigations they went after Clinton with, I'd say, there probably was just as much of a concerted effort to thwart Clinton's agenda as Obama's. Remember health care how they went after that back in the 90's? Remember gingrich?

I'd say the fact that Obama was black just gave them one more wapon in their arsonal to go after ANY democrat. republican policies are racist, after all, so they were well practiced.

There was a comment during that segment that it wasn't unusual for Democratic and Republican Congressmen getting together for a beer after work during the Clinton Administration.

That all changed after Newt Gingrich created a handbook to pass out to Republican Congressmen. I think the handbook was called GoPack (my memory fails me on the exact name) and it had degrading definitions in this handbook for Democratic Congressmen.

I never knew this about Newt Gingrich, but I was not surprised.

I know a whole lot of rednecks here in the popdick midwest who climbed out of the woodwork and became a lot more political once the president was a threat to their white privilege. Bill Clinton was one thing, but in the end he was still a white guy from Arkansas with a drawl, Barack Obama was entirely another in the mind of a group of people that realizes they don't have much of anything other than the privilege of whiteness. "I may be poor uneducated unemployed live in a trailer that leaks but at least I'm not a (insert racial epithet here)." Once the president was black it destroyed that for them and they started this tea party shit and they became the more active assholes you see at Trump rallies.

It's been brewing for a long time but at the heart of it it's the sheer stupidity of their hate for everything and everybody. Obama was only the final squeeze of the trigger they've been holding the head of Uncle Sam for 60 odd years.

It's unfathomable to me how much you can hate so much that you are willing to ignore all of the damage being done. The people left that support Republicans, regardless of race, are people that you can't trust. Modern Republicanism("conservativism" has brought us almost nothing of intrinsic worth. There may be a thing here and there they managed to get right, but by and far it's done nothing except breed extremism and insanity in its practitioners.

50. No, the madness started after 9/11.

If Barack Obama was that "maddening", he couldn't have gotten two terms in office.

56. Boy howdie! They sure did lose their fucking minds!

But it shows we white people were deluded into thinking racism was a thing of the past. It was quite alive and well except it was in the closet, under rocks, lurking in the dark shadows in the corners and the underbelly of this country.

In my case I was nowhere close to it because I worked for 20 years in one of the historically famous bastions of liberalism, the University of California at Berkeley. My parents were also UC Berkeley liberal graduates, and I went there for a couple of years as a student. It might as well be a different universe there. Every race and ethnicity is represented there on all levels, from Faculty to Staff to students.

There is no escaping the truth now, for any of us. Hopefully my strong belief that the truth is always a good thing to know will hold strong and prove to be exactly what we need as a society to become better. We have so much work to do!

58. Hard To Disagree

It made me a certain segment of Voters vote in response to Obama, absolutely.

But that Orange narcissistic Creep lost by 3 million votes. Thanks Electoral College, only in American Presidential races can someone with less votes win. It is ridiculous.

61. And, somehow, nominating a white male will win them over and be the key to success in 2020.

Fucking nonsense.

Turn out the base.

63. Somebody tell me if I'm paranoid.

After the New Zealand shooting I felt that something was missing, and it finally came to me. I don't see conspiracy theories about shootings or terrorist attacks being staged with crisis actors anymore, haven't seen it in ... two years? Is it my imagination or was it only during Obama's presidency those CTs were popular? Like concern over government surveillance and drone warfare, the CTs blaming the American government for staging shootings have disappeared.

64. Parkland students were accused of being crisis actors.

But yeah, I think many of the Trump base have begun to tacitly nod in approval of incidents like these now. Which is terrifying.
