I don't envy the children of Lori Loughlin and/or Felicity Huffman when they return from Spring

Break.

Classrooms can be brutal when your classmates turn against you.

My guess is that they transfer or drop out.

they will return to the same table in the cafeteria as before.

btw, if they had spent a little of that spring break time being serious about their classes ........

Last edited Thu Mar 14, 2019, 07:42 AM - Edit history (1)

They could be offered a chance to reapply for admission, but I see no reason to leave them in school under their previous admission and a lot of arguments against it. Their presence offers a permanent black mark on the institution. Their admission is stolen goods essentially, so continuing to attend under that original application is equivalent to retaining stolen property. Finally, how does the University enforce honor-bound rules in its code of conduct or against plagiarism for example when this walking positive testament to cheating attends their school by fraudulent means.

49. I would suggest they should be treated on a case by case basis

It sounds like this has happened for years, so some may actually be in their senior year. All will face parents possibly going to jail and suffering economic punishments. Every one of those students are seeing their very comfortable lives being torn apart before their lives.

I think it would be a great idea for any of these students, who have succeeded for several semesters, to go to someone in authority in their school and ask if they could take a year of absence to do community service helping under privileged community to atone for letting and likely helping their parents unfairly get them into the prestigious school they are in. They could ask that any decision on letting them finish should be made as they complete that service or they and the school could agree that they should transfer elsewhere.

To me, this would show that they understand what they did was wrong.

4. Their daughters may face expulsion.

USC put out a statement that the status of students whose application process was involved in this scandal will be determined on a case by case basis. It seems it will be determined by the level of knowledge and whether they would have qualified in the absence of the fraud.

Lori Loughlin's daughter will need to have a good story as to why she was posing in fake pictures rowing a boat. Further, it seems from what was reported that this girl wasn't interested in going to college in the first place. I doubt she will return to school other than to collect her belongings from her dorm room.

daughter has said she didn’t really want to be there. *

As this goes on, it does seem like an unfair burden of the publicity over this has fallen on the two actresses whose faces are usually used as the lead story. I could see one of them asking their publicist what the recourse to that is, if any. Maybe plaster someone else and spread the joy.

*edit—I guess Olivia Jade’s instagram is being trolled and some are trying to get Sephora to drop her. That is a bit extreme to try and harm her further. Why try and ruin her other resources and contacts.

Is that Lori Laughlin said,” She wanted her children to have the College experience she did not have,” But taught them it is fine to lie and cheat to get there.

I don't know why he picked on ASU in particular; I'm sure you can get a dandy education there if you have the will to do it.

Even if the kids knowingly posed for pictures, they weren't adults. Period. We hesitate to try (some) kids as adults for a variety of crimes because they're underage, and presumably most of these kids were underage when the cheating happened. Yes, they were children of privilege, but I agree that this should be a case-by-case basis, just like with any criminal charge for a minor.

... why would they even want to be at those ivy-league schools?

The idea of parents buying their kid's acceptance at a particular school is so destructive ... for the child! Who cares what the parents are willing to do, it's whether their child will ever earn anything by their own efforts and abilities. Somehow the middle class parents (people I know) had this figured out long ago. Extremely wealthy people will never figure it out.

28. The only kid I might feel sorry for is one it appears that his mother tricked.

From The Daily Mail (if you can believe them, but this was from the indictment):

Jane Buckingham

Buckingham is the owner of the now defunct market research firm, Youth Intelligence. She sold the company in 2003.

She is charged in the scheme for allegedly paying $50,000 to have someone else take her son's ACT exam in July 2018 because he had tonsilitis.

Buckingham sent a handwriting sample for her son to a test taker and had him take a fake exam at home so he wouldn't know about the fraud, court documents indicate.

This article has the full list of people indicted. It looks like some USC coaches and officials are in deep shit.

Here we have had one expose after another in Charter Schools where the owner was paying people to take tests, lying about how many students they have, stealing, bankrupcies. One after another.

The biggest was an online Charter School, stole millions. Everyone was approved by a Republican Governor who is now telling people he is a fine, Religious man you can trust.

40. We're looking at this through adult lenses. Think back to when you were 16. Would you

believe your mom or dad? I would've. Then again, my folks wouldn't have dreamed of doing such a thing. Hell, my folks packed me up, dropped me off at college, and that was it. I was on my own. Oh, I still went home summers for the first couple of years, and got a few bucks from them now and then, but that was it. Most of these kids were in on the scam, especially the ones who participated in the fake sports photos, but I can't blame all of them. It's just too bad that, even if the duped ones aren't expelled, their education will always have an * next to it. But if their folks are rich enough to participate in this sort of scam, they'll still be okay.

71. That is a BS story

They had to of known. I have gone through the college app process X4. It is very involved and requires the kids input. Just to apply to take the SAts/ACT requires ID. You apply online, you have to send them a photo of yourself similar to a passport photo. That is attached to your file. When you go to the testing place, you show them your government issued ID. They are compared. I do not believe the kid did not know his mother arranged, at the last minute a stand in for her son. It had to have been planned from the application process to have the correct photo and time to get a forged iD to match it. A last minute stand in because your kid is sick? No fucking way.

When you take the exam the only thing you are allowed is a calculator. Not a phone or PC with a calculator. A Scientific calculator. All electronics turned off and left in your car or in your backpack which is stored out of reach. They are not going to let you take that exam at home.

I read one of Huffman's daughters got 1000 on her 1st SAT. Then somehow got a DR's note saying she had ADHD which enabled her to take the test with additional time. That required a special proctor. The kid had to sign up for a specific date to get the paid-off proctor who then changed her answers. A few months later she scored 1400. You can't tell me that, that kid did not know she was scamming the system. She actually thought she was smart enough to score 1400, a 400 point increase.

They may lose some friends, but they can always buy more.

52. The message to all needs to be that fraud won't be tolerated. They should all be expelled.

Assuming sufficient evidence, and I'm sure there is if the Feds have indictments, all the students who benefitted from fraud should be expelled.

Otherwise, the message is that even if you parents get caught, your children will still benefit from the fraud.

58. I'd be surprised if the universities didn't tell them to leave, and apply elsewhere. Seriously...

How can anyone trust that they won't have someone else writing all their papers for them? -- Wait, that's happening all over these days. But even so.

Anyway, California has a great system of community colleges and state colleges that they can go to. There's no SATs for the community colleges, and then they can transfer to Podunk State, far from the coast and the big cities.

Poor things.

63. The Loughlin kids are entitled

and wanted the college experience, before striking out on their own, backed by Mossimo money. I doubt they would care if they graduated or not. It's not like those kids are going to be drowned in student loan debt like the rest of us. If they learn some compassion out of this ordeal at all, it will have been worth it. I doubt it though...

64. I doubt the Loughlin ones will return then. More likely that they'll take leave for the rest of term

then not go back, likely withdrawing themselves before possibly being dismissed.

They are still sitting on a fortune and can use family connections to advance into acting and fashion/makeup, which is what they seem to be more interested in than education.

I feel more for the students who qualify for and need disability accommodations. Because of that aspect of this scam, they are going to face more barriers in terms of possible increased scrutiny and a higher bar for qualification as well as suspicion from peers that they might not ‘really’ have a disability.

Lori Loughlin’s daughters will not return to the University of Southern California, or USC, because they reportedly cannot deal with the bullying.

69. I believe the appropriate response...

...is "Boo-fucking-hoo."

Make the parents should go to the classes and live in the housing for the remainder of the semester.

I can see perhaps not knowing that one's parents pulled financial influence strings of one kind or another, but I absolutely cannot believe that athletic prowess could be faked without being in on it -ESPECIALLY IF IT IS A SPORT YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED!!! This is the part that really frosts me.

70. Projected bullying

As a USC alum I really don't think it would have been as bad as they fear, or most people are suggesting.

I remember scandals in my '80s era, like a track sprinter who received credit for taking two classes at the exact time block at two different schools. Sure it made headlines and there were other examples of academic cheating. The school was put on probation and was ineligible for a bowl game as result. That was a huge deal. But the people involved were hardly bullied or ridiculed. I remember the vast majority of students walking briskly past, in their own world and completely unaware or unconcerned. At the student newspaper Daily Trojan office we commented frequently about how it was a much bigger deal in print and on the media, than during day to day life. More people on campus cared about Luke and Laura on General Hospital than anyone involved in our scandals.

That might be somewhat different today given social media, but I'd love to wager it wouldn't be appreciably different. I can envision the foot traffic heading in all directions at the intersection of Bovard Auditorium/Doheny Library/Student Union/Tommy Trojan. Nobody is going to care about Olivia Jade if she is walking in the same area.

Now, if she is paranoid about her social media accounts and how the responses there will differ compared to previously...that is undoubtedly accurate.
