UK says food standards will not be lowered for US trade deal

The UK will not lower food standards to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the US, the government says. European Union rules currently limit US exports of certain food products, including chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-boosted beef.

America's National Farmers Union has always maintained that its chicken and beef, which uses processes banned by the EU, is "perfectly safe" and argues there has been a lot of "fear-mongering".

The British National Farmers Union said the UK government should not accept an American deal "which allows food to be imported into this country produced in ways which would be illegal here".

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "We have always been very clear that we will not lower our food standards as part of a future trading agreement."

1. good for them

Unless a country suffers from extreme hunger like many places in Africa, there is no need to consume chlorine washed chicken, hormone boosted beef and genetically modified corn. Those production boosting industrial processes are designed to increase profits not to lower prices.
