DAY 1: DEPART CHICAGO

Hawaii by Rail tour members will meet the Tour Director in Chicago’s Union Station. The Metropolitan Lounge will be our base in Chicago. The Willis Tower, one of the world’s tallest buildings, is close by. Other Chicago attractions are a brief cab ride away.

The Skytrain was a service between London and New York. Of course it was a plane, not a train...

Freddie Laker would probably love to see a Skytrain to Hawaii...

I know it's a bit off topic but ...

Their tourism economy would probably triple in less than a week.

What you doin for the weekend?
Taking off Thursday and Monday for a short vacation.
What you doing with it?
Taking the train to Hawaii to go surfing.
You live in CHICAGO.
I know. Isn't it awesome?

Train travel is so civilized. I fly because I like to go places, but I'm not fond of flying itself.

My daughters went to college on the East Coast (we live in the west) and then they stayed there, the little rats! So I fly. If it didn't take three days and cost a ton of money, I would take the train.

attempt to criticize AOC's Green New Deal.

Specifically the part that say that says

Totally overhaul transportation by massively expanding electric vehicle
manufacturing, build charging stations everywhere, build out highspeed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary, create
affordable public transit available to all, with goal to replace every
combustion-engine vehicle

It does seem to call for high-speed rail to replace air travel completely.

Most don't have time to sit on a train for 2-3 days when a plane can get you somewhere in a few hours.

High-speed rail, sure. It will serve purpose, but so does air travel. A green new deal has to make sense, not just be a romantic vision of what train travel used to be. High-speeed rail and air travel co-exist in Europe, why should one replace the other?

The proposal is likely not worded in the best way but nobody should be naive enough to think they are talking about eliminating ALL air travel. They likely meant domestic air travel. People jump on planes from Boston to New York or from LA to San Francisco every day. Those short jump flights are incredibly taxing on the environment. If a network of high speed rail can be established that reduces the travel time between those short jump cities, then it would give travelers another very viable option that would eventually eliminate those routes. If sufficient infrastructure could be built across the nation, then eventually it would make air travel less necessary and less profitable.

Right now in California, you either fly for an hour and a half or you drive for upwards of 6.5 hours to go from cities in the north to the south. The California project would have shortened a main travel point to 2 hours. That would have allowed me to visit my family at least a couple times a month.

And Amtrac was one of the authorized ways to get there. There was no way to actually book a ticket, though.
Just a glitch in the system at that time. I think it's been fixed by now - that was 15 years ago
