A new acquaintance of mine, Rebecca, is in the Army. When she was deployed to Iraq, she was attacked by her superior, raped, bashed in the head, and left for dead. She was also injured physically when a an IED blew up the HumVee that she was in. She's been through a lot, physically and emotionally, but she's still persevering.
She's founded an organization called Walk Against Rape (http://www.walkagainstrape.org/W.A.R./Home.html) to help out local rape crisis centers in the DC area, and to help guarantee "safe nurses" at all local hospitals. They're doing walks in DC and New York City next spring. She's also been nominated for a CNN Hero award.
I'm so proud of this brave young woman that I could just burst. She's been through hell, and she's using that experience to help other women.
I just thought that I'd share this with DU, in case someone wants to help out.

Good for her.
I hope the bastard who raped her is facing charges.

Sadly.
They have gotten much better in a few other ways, but not when it comes to rape. The most the men get is a slap in the wrist, and the women get punished (as in face the music) for the rest of their career.

I know there are complications, but to hell with that.

(36,823 posts)It is little wonder that rape is one of the least-reported crimes. Perhaps, it is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused and, in reality, it is she who must prove her good reputation, her mental soundness, and her impeccable propriety.
