About MS-13...

Been hearing a lot about them lately-- had several nasty murders attributed to them down the road a bit, and the MS-13 scum responsible were recently convicted.

Howsumever, often notoriety is infused with bullshit to make the story more interesting, or to fit in with someone's interests. Such it is with this gang.

MS-13 is NOT a Salvadoran invention or export. It started in the late '70s in LA among Salvadoran immigrants, as so many immigrant gangs have started. (And not, by the way, just Latinos. Check out Italians, Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Russians... Movies are made about this stuff.)

As this article (just one among many that showed up in a search) points out, MS-13 is an export, not an import. Even worse, it was directly related to our own (or at least Reagan's) actions rewriting the Monroe Doctrine.

Soon however, El Salvador would become yet another tragic Cold War proxy, and the effect of that has reverberated for decades. The 1980s marked the start of a bloody 12-year Salvadoran civil war, intensified by U.S. interference backing the Salvadoran military regime against leftist revolutionaries supported by Nicaragua, Cuba, and the Soviet Union. 75,000 civilians lost their lives, and many thousands more were “disappeared,” tortured, displaced — or some combination of all three.

If any one thing can be blamed for causing MS-13 to flourish outside American borders, the blame can be placed squarely on the United States’ foreign and immigration policy. Salvadorans deported to their country of origin spread Los Angeles street gang motifs and culture to Central America — and MS-13 is hardly the only gang to have international factions.Soon however, El Salvador would become yet another tragic Cold War proxy, and the effect of that has reverberated for decades. BTW, local news also brings up the Bloods opening a new HQ in the area, but no one's getting hysterical about that.
