OMG the Joy show is absolute shit right now

Holy shit I am fucking PISSED!

Joy on MSNBC just spent FOREVER talking about Schultz, and now they are going ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON about the Warren Native American nonsense.

This segment must have been going on for 15+ minutes and NOT ONE FUCKING SECOND spent on ANY of Warren's policy proposals.

Just "Indian, Indian, Indian, Indian, Indian, Indian"

This shit should be BOYCOTTED!

EDIT: And the segment is now over. Literally not one second spent on any of Warren's policy proposals.

EDIT2: The show has posted two short clips from this segment, to give you an idea. Remember, zero discussion of Medicare for All, taxing the super wealthy or ANY policies at all.

1. This is all part of the "Horse Race" narrative designed to keep one watching "their" channels

The narrative is designed to keep everyone worked up and worried that "their" candidate is up or down according to the polling and lasted whatever. It is rarely if ever a discussion of the issues. It goes like this......

This week She is up until there is a hiccup of some small issue blown way out of proportion in the Breathless 24/7 Cable Noise Infotainment. Next Week He's up and doing well in some obscure poll with 12 people and a cat responding, but Oh Noes, by week end a new face has entered the run and all the oxygen is taken out of the room. Followed by the discovery that as a child the fresh face pushed another kid in the hall way in grammar school so that will take several news cycles between the pharmaceutical ads to discuss. Week 4 She will make a strong speech and return to the top of the polling, but will it be enough to overcome the whispered stories of her 3rd cousin 14 times removed being addicted to Snickers Bars? In the meantime He will get tongue tied turning an interview having not had enough sleep and there will be questions of his age and can he really serve? The Fresh Face will suddenly soar to the top on word of a fundraiser far exceeding its goals of $12.47.

Rinse and repeat but be sure to allow time for more ads for drugs we never knew we needed and the anchors hawking their latest books on The Crisis in the Media.

30. We are doomed as a country

I am not on board with Warren, but you are right, the public needs to spend more time focusing on policy and capability today, and not something that happened 30 plus years ago. She made a mistake. I personally feel she thought she would gain an advantage by claiming Native American heritage. Whether she did or not is actually irrelevant. That fact does not exclude her from being President.

33. Nope, I disagree,

Of course networks have to make money but that is secondary to sticking to the narrative.

All of the 3 major cable news networks push the right wing corporate narrative. MSNBC merely puts a liberal slant to the right wing narrative.

Phil Donahue, Keith Olbermann, Cenk Uygur, Melissa Harris/Perry, Martin Brashear, Ed Schultz, and my favorite Dylan Ratigan who was passionately explaining our nation's crony capitalism so dummies like me could understand, all of these people had good ratings (money makers) yet they were all fired because they strayed from the right wing corporate narrative.

The M$M is not our friend.

The "Horse Race" Narrative is as stated designed to make money, but also to keep folks agitated (as is a good percentage of the other infotainment), distracted and buying into the narrative being offered. Yes, most of that is I wouldn't say so much RW as it is Corporate and granted they are very much aligned.

Keep folks pointing fingers at and arguing with each other playing the blame (insert name of group here) and the big money folks laugh all the way to the bank.

80. Charlie Pierce has written great pieces on this bullsh*t

re Warren and the NA ancestry issue.

Basically, it's "Damned if she addressed the issue and damned if she didn't", and throw in that it's all designed to turn the narrative away from her policy proposals.

[link:https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a25713946/elizabeth-warren-announce-run-for-president-2020/|]

[link:https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a23845480/elizabeth-warren-native-american-dna-test-media-coverage/|]

I am reminded of the account in Horace Porter's book about campaigning with Ulysses S. Grant of how sick Grant was of hearing his officers worry about what Robert E. Lee was going to do.

The general rose to his feet, took his cigar out of his mouth, turned to the officer, and replied, with a degree of animation which he seldom manifested : "Oh, I am heartily tired of hearing about what Lee is going to do. Some of you always seem to think he is suddenly going to turn a double somersault, and land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time. Go back to your command, and try to think what we are going to do ourselves, instead of what Lee is going to do."

You can't run a campaignómilitary or politicalówith an attitude like that. After all, absent direct confrontation, what would be SPW's other options? Ignore the smears and calumny? Ask Presidents Dukakis, Kerry, and Hillary Rodham Clinton how that worked out.

[link:https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a23787339/elizabeth-warren-dna-test-pocahontas-native-american-heritage/|]

Yes, I am very sorry that our politics is in such a degraded state that it was even necessary for Senator Professor Warren to jump through this particular hoop. After all, the whole thing has been a buffoonish smear from the start, and it hasn't even been that much of a drawback to her political success.

her campaign before she even gets started. I think it is a very concerted effort from a lot of sources--not just the RW, but Wall Street for sure. It is being compounded on the left, unfortunately.

26. Yep.

The point is to do the ancestry research so they can exclude anyone claiming native heritage.

It is all about the money.

Remember the Freedman fight that the Tribal leaders launched in 2007?

Judge Rules That Cherokee Freedmen Have Right To Tribal Citizenship

A judge ruled Wednesday that the descendants of enslaved people who were owned by members of the Cherokee Nation ó known as Cherokee Freedmen ó have citizenship rights.

"The Cherokee Nation can continue to define itself as it sees fit," U.S. District Judge Thomas F. Hogan wrote in his ruling, "but must do so equally and evenhandedly with respect to native Cherokees and the descendants of Cherokee Freedmen."

After Emancipation, the Cherokee Nation granted its former slaves tribal citizenship as part of a treaty with the U.S. government in 1866. But in 2007, Cherokee members voted overwhelmingly to strip 2,800 Freedmen of their membership, defining tribal citizenship as "by blood."

The only way to stop him is to run a candidate who will turn his attacks against him.

Trump knows how to effectively hijack the media and turn it into a propaganda tool. They will do the same against whoever we run in 2020. He creates soundbites that can be easily spread on Facebook and the media.

It's not hopeless, but the odds are stacked against us.

The M$M has always been right wing. The Russian trolls and bots makes it worse for us but we have an advantage that we learned from what they did.

Listen hard everyone, the only way we lose in 2020 is if we fight among ourselves. Recognize that what is shown in the M$M, in cable news, is propaganda. Whatever we do we cannot become discouraged.

Do not fall for bogus polls they are part of the propaganda.

Do not criticize our Democratic candidates, we have a very good crop, the cream will rise to the top and we will end up with a candidate who we can all get behind.

The end is near for the GOP/Trump control in the Senate.

The end is near for Trump.

8. That really pisses me off

Cable TV is doing the republicans work for them. With all the real scandals out there, why do they keep focusing on this non-story? Did they really learn nothing from "Hillary's emails"?

We had a week packed full of very real and dynamic stories. Howard Schultz is boring and no one cares that Warren's family believed they had Native American ancestry (as do many people in this country). Did Warren cheat on her taxes? Take money and gifts from foreign nationals? Use her position to enrich her friends and relatives? Take corporate donations in return for favorable legislation votes? Knowingly lie about pretty much ANYTHING?

Warren's problem is that she is squeaky clean and principled, so the right is more likely to try and undermine her any way they can. They certainly don't need the MSM to be an echo chamber.

It was Not Cherokee, Not Cherokee, Not Cherokee, Not Cherokee, Not Cherokee, Not Cherokee.

Which says absolfreakinglutely nothing about the (small amount of) Native American heritage that she DOES have. The "expert" that she had on kept bragging about how well documented the absolutely all of the people Cherokee are. Which is bullshit, because there is no group that has absolutely everyone documented that far back. Not being able to find someone in historical records does not mean that they didn't exist or weren't part of some other tribe.

She has Native American ancestors. She got no preference on her Bar application for stating she had Native American ancestors. Period. End of story.

She claimed her primary racial identity was Native American. I can only think of one credible reason for doing that - an attempt to obtain an advantage in a position or business. Whether she actually did is irrelevant.

On the other hand she made a mistake 30+ years ago. Who should care now. Who she is now is what is important.

My concern is less that she did that then than that neither she nor her team addressed it before it came out. That was a public bar filing that she submitted herself and it's part of her public record. They should have found that and gotten out in front of it before it became a thing.

115. Read the application! It clearly states the question was for statisical purposes only.

There was no advantage, and it is bullshit to claim what her motives may have been. It wouldn't have mattered if she said Martian. Normally the answers on questions like that are not even tabulated with names associated.

The "expert" on Joy went on and on about her not being Cherokee. Like that means anything. There's over 500 different tribes in the US. Ancestry DNA has ONE genetic group for all of them. She has some Native American heritage. That was proven with her DNA test. What particular group of Native Americans her ancestors came from is, to my knowledge, is unknown, as there has not been enough of a sample size to sort that out with DNA testing.

A lot of people have "family stories" of Native American ancestors and many find no trace with DNA testing, partially because there haven't been enough Native Americans taking tests. She did find that her story was more than a "story". She has some Native American ancestors. People need to get the hell over it.

I can think of only two reasons to be negative about her having Native American ancestry:

A: One doesn't like her and it's a convenient attack.
B: One is fricking racist.

34. I think sometimes the MSNBC hosts have to do this "both sides" shit

As much as I respect Joy Reid, I don't think she and the other hosts get to choose their own topics all the time. I think the NBC bosses are making them take the "both sides" stance just so they can keep the Repukes happy.

It was probably distasteful for Joy to do this show, but she had to or you know, lose her job. Maybe it's not really that like that, but I'm guessing that she's hoping to get a regular weekday gig when something opens up. (For example Chris Matthews is close to retiring in a year or two.) Joy is hard-working and effective whenever she's the fill-in host on Rachel's or Lawrence's show. So that tells me that maybe she would eventually be considered for one of the top spots herself.

Another one is Chuck Todd, whose main gig is Meet the Press on Sunday mornings, still a top-rated show. Todd doesn't have many fans here on DU I know, but he has to play "both sides" in order to book the Repukes on his show. If he couldn't do that, then he'd be fired in a heartbeat I'm sure.

All I can say is, grain of salt. We know the truth about the Repukes, and we know the MSNBC hosts have to play the game sometimes. The last thing we want is for MSNBC to turn into another Faux News. Then I would boycott them for sure.

No surprise, I suppose, in the "alternative facts" era.
Circa 1981 or so, a television I'd inherited from my late grandmother did not survive the last object I threw at it when Ray Gun blathered more trickle down nonsense. I'd always found televisionus programming a nauseating total waste of time, at the time I preferred to spend time in my garden or soft music with a book and my pets in the evening.
About 20 years thereafter, having made some fragile reconciliation with my parental units to where they dared visit my gay household for thanksgiving, they were terribly dismayed that I subscribed to no television services. At the time Dish network had a pre-paid plan, so the following year I subscribed to a month of their swill and bought an actual television to display it upon.
The following year Dish no longer offered the pre-paid plan, and I had to "subscribe" to appease my aging parents.
With exception of specialty channels, the selections still required sifting through hours and copious selections of garbage for tiny bits of informational programming. After my parents demise, the televisionus rays no longer invade my home.

Schultz needs to be discussed because he is a threat who can very much put Trump back in and cut off any avenues toward the change we want to see. The Senate is up too and, frankly, all I see everywhere is carping on the presidential candidates. We need to be able to govern effectively.

Warren's policies were discussed.

This is going to be a very big election - of the 33 Senate seats up for election, 21 are now republican seats and 12 Democratic seats, just about the opposite of last year. We have a great chance of taking over the Senate, keeping the House, and hopefully putting trump or Pence out to pasture.

136. Thanks, that makes it easier to assess. I think we're going to lose Doug Jones - we were lucky....

....to get him because Roy Moore was so weak. But he's the only Democrat I see losing.

On the other hand, with Stacey Abrams running so strong in November, we could knock off Perdue (who knows, maybe she'll run?), and we could defeat Gardner and Collins (people in Maine are fed up with her) Unfortunately that would still leave us one short - 49 to 51.

I wonder what the people of Iowa think of Ernst or those in N. Carolina think of Tillis? They're the only other republicans who aren't in really strong red states, except maybe Cornyn. Could Beto be considering running against him? He'll have two more years of exposure and a stronger organization.

It's going to be a squeaker, and the Democratic candidate's showing in the Presidential election is going have an effect, too.

89. This nonsense is a huge part of why I don't own a TV.

You simply don't learn anything useful most of the time. People allow themselves to get caught up in various bullshit narratives and completely overlook what actually matters.

I frequently find myself pointing out to people here that their TV does have an off button, which ought to be exercises a bit more often.

99. I think Joy Reid is Kamala or bust

I like her and show quite a bit...but I noticed she and many people connected to her show furiously go after people who dare question Kamala's past policies - at least via Twitter.

100. The media did not give a dime's worth of time to Bernie and those same

issues that Sen. Warren and other progressives have been advocating, ... The Whole First Year, of his campaign with Clinton. We had to tune into that special channel on line to get to hear his speeches and see his Enormous crowds.

The reason we are hearing of these issues now is because Bernie has been traversing the country talking about all of them for the past 4 years. The majority of this country likes what he says. Don't you all hear Bernie talking when the newcomers speak? Thank you, Bernie!

And guess who first put into actual practice the challenge of accepting NO big donor money! Another Thank you, Bernie.

And let's not hear any more "Old Age" business.

104. I love Elizabeth Warren but the DNA test did not help.

I believe she thought it would vindicate her and she took a chance, but unfortunately it didn't. Hope we can talk about other issues and she can overcome this, but given the media bias and character assassination that occurs 24/7, it is uphill. She is one of the most threatening to the status quo (health lobby, Wall St., uber-rich, gun lobby) and the knives are out. The hate machine now has their talking points and corporate media has largely followed it. Trump is disgusting but very good at using these insults to his advantage and to appeal to the fifth grade mentality base. It works. He destroyed the GOP candidates similarly in the primary.

121. I don't agree with your characterization of the segment.

It's a topic that has come up and liberals representing opposite sides of the issue discussed how they viewed it. We can't bury our head in the sand with regard to the topics that will be brought up in the primaries and/or GE.
