2 Detroit officers suspended for video taunting black woman

DETROIT — Two Detroit police officers have been suspended amid an investigation into racially demeaning comments made during a traffic stop and posted on social media.

Officer Gary Steele and an unidentified officer stopped 23-year-old Ariel Moore for driving with an expired license plate last week. They seized the vehicle, leaving Moore to walk one block to her home in the cold and dark.

WXYZ-TV reports that video posted to Steele's Snapchat account showed Moore walking home as he says "priceless" and "bye Felicia." The caption tags read: "What black girl magic looks like" and "celebrating Black History Month."

Police Chief James Craig said Monday that the officers have been suspended with pay. Craig earlier demoted Steele from corporal and apologized to Moore.

I've been stopped for expired tabs before. I received a ticket with a sizable fine but I never had my vehicle impounded.

10. I've been pulled over three times for expired tags.

Twice I was written a fix-it ticket, politely informed how to resolve it, and sent on my way.

Once my tags were actually in order but still flagged his computer. He looked at my paperwork and let me go with the benefit of the doubt.

The only difference between this young lady and me is the concentration of melanin in our epidermis. That stupid little variance all it takes to change a traffic stop from polite procedural boredom to impounding and mockery, or potentially a fatal confrontation. That fucking sucks.
