Democratic Messaging

Opinion

The fast-growing slate of potential Democratic 2020 candidates is splendid, yet none are offering a simple, anti-.45 theme to voters like myself.

I’m hearing worthy platitudes, but not enough raw anger about the thousands of lies, the destruction of government institutions, the u-turns on our allies and agreements, or the loss of our legitimacy as a world leader.

Why pretend that we were not compromised in 2016?

Tell the story. It’s true. And we’ve got the truth on our side.

I think we need a firebrand. A fighter. A counter-counter-puncher. No,more Mr. Fu*kin Nice Guy. Who will step up?

Voters, even Democratic ones, are not as focused on Trump and his issues, Russia, Impeachment, etc. as activists and bloggers are. We won the House back in 2018 because we talked about ISSUES: Healthcare, Jobs, Education, etc. None of the candidates I spoke to said voters wanted to discuss Trump.

nb - I spoke with the Governor of NC last night. He did NOT say that the way to win his State in 2020 was to beat up Donald Trump.

I love me some anti-Trump red meat as much as the next guy. But that is not necessarily a winning strategy.

That's not to say that someone on our side wouldn't lose my vote or respect if they started praising or working with Trump......just that I don't expect that to be the crux of their message.

We have to focus on issues and let him hang himself. As with the shutdown. The issue was "no wall and that's final." Meanwhile Trump just ranted himself into a corner and folded.

Same thing with the election. We will have plans to deal with all major issues. He will have a wall, failed deals and twitter.

Fine, we can point out how the Repubs (and Trump) have blocked efforts to improve medical coverage, but we need to run on positives, what we plan to do and how.

Let the Repubs run on defending Trump and their record.

Some of those just naturally touch on trumpism, such as the attacks on health care by Trump / Pence*, but the focus of candidates must be on what people need.

Law enforcement and Congressional committees can deal with Trump and co-conspirators.
