Let's brainstorm some ways to get Fed employees paid...

bonus points if they would cause a MAJOR headache for Trump. Here are some ideas:

- Some Governors could declare a "State of Emergency" in their state which would enable funds from FEMA to be used to pay them, which would then have to be repaid by Trump

- How about a class action lawsuit?? Are there some laws out there for working without pay for x amount of time? This would at least put it in the hands of the courts.

- What if the House Dems passed a bill saying the Govt. had to pay interest to any employees withheld pay during the shutdown? This would quickly add up to hundreds of millions of dollars.

- Can the House Dems vote to censure the President and McConnell for an attack on the American People???

What are some other ideas?? This is ridiculous that they can force people to work and experience severe hardship without paying them.

Come on, there must be some extreme way out of this or some way to put new forms of pressure on Trump.

1. Sounds like there's about 5 billion in the offing for a dumb ass wall, and a whole lot of folks

who are showing they can't miss a paycheck or two without certain disaster. I wish they'd use the 5 bil. to give Fed Employees 'Living Wages' so Americans can live the dream that seems to be only reserved for rich kids. Like trum and kavanaugh, and corporations etc. Everybody in the USA needs a substantial raise. Starting w Fed Workers.
The way out is to do what the Ds elected Spkr Pelosi to do, support her decisions. (IMHO) Hopefully this will be the last of these ridiculous govt shut downs, and we all can move forward w the same "certainty" that every corporation in the world requires before even negotiating a new endeavor. Everyone needs certainty. I'll be watching to see if you get an answer. Good job trying.

2. None of those are practical.

Somehow I seriously doubt FEMA funds could be used that way. Class action suits take a very long time to make their way through the courts. And House Democrats passing a bill or even a censure motion as proposed wouldn't go anywhere.

3. I saw a segment on CBS this morning

A furloughed worker said she had $1.06 in the bank and was selling possessions. She said she couldn't find a job. My thought was, how about that low unemployment rate -45 keeps touting. Jobs should be everywhere. Of course what I really thought was how those numbers can be manipulated. Apparently the furloughed workers aren't being counted when figuring the unemployment rate. But then, I'm always skeptical of those numbers anyway.

I think someone should introduce a bill that says a president can't shut down the government. When we get a president without a conscience, like we have now, it's a disaster for them to have so much power.

4. -45 should be locked into the WH until the shutdown ends

And Melanie should have to stay there with him. And lets just go ahead and lock McConnell in there too. No travel. No services for them. It'd save security expenses if they aren't out and about.

5. We could fill Congress' email/vmail boxes with messages to get the government back open.

Starting with Moscow Mitch.

McConnell, Mitch - (R - KY) Class II
317 Russell Senate Office Building Washington DC 20510
(202) 224-2541
Contact: www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=contact

"Senator McConnell. Your refusal to allow any funding legislation to be voted on puts this shutdown squarely on you. We will not forget come 2020."

End with your full name & zip code. Then call your own senators, even if they are republican.

We are good at getting out the vote, but not so good at the followup to that - call your MOCs & tell them how you feel. We should be filling their email/vmail boxes every week, but the last time that happened was the financial crisis of 2008.

Are we there yet?

10. McConnell should not be

thinking he will win in his re-election, unless they rig the voting machines (by McConnell's band of Russian Oligarchs and China connection), and use voter suppression.

I sent McConnell an e-mail yesterday. Hateful and greedy SOB's.

6. I don't think FEMA relief works that way and none of the other suggestions work either

To get FEMA funding, the President has to declare an emergency, not merely a governor.

There have been attempts in the courts -- they've failed.

A bill voted by House Democrats that isn't also passed by the Senate doesn't do anything.

There is no constitutional basis for either house to "censure" the President, although there is some precedent for such an action. But it wouldn't have any practical effect on whether the government stays shutdown or employees do or don't get paid. I don't believe there is any precedent for one chamber to "censure" or in any other way take action with respect to a member of the other chamber and there is zero chance of that ever happening, particularly since it would have no practical effect on anything.

If there was a way out of this, don't you think it would have been done already?

13. Me too. They have no idea what it's like living hand to mouth.

Takes an act of Congress to raise the Fed Min Wage I think. While the govts shut down, hopefully Congresspeople are putting together good legislation so when the log jam breaks...we can be prepared to pepper the Country w goodness. We deserve FAR better.

14. They typically get raises every year, though typically only 1% in recent years

With exception to a '11-13 and this year, so far, the GS baseline payscale has been raised by Congress every year. However, even if the base payscale isn't raised, many employees will still receive raises through step increases, which is based on years worked. Locality bonuses are also adjusted, I believe yearly, which could also bump pay for workers in areas where cost of living is rising.
