GOP committee passes resolution to cancel Republican primary due to Trump's 'effective presidency'

GOP committee passes resolution to cancel Republican primary due to Trump’s ‘effective presidency’

The Republican National Committee’s resolutions group passed a resolution effectively canceling the GOP primary in 2020.

“RNC Resolutions Committee just voted unanimously to “undivided support” for Trump and his “effective presidency,” clearing way for passage before full GOP governing body on Friday,” tweeted Associated Press reporter Zeke Miller.

The Resolution Committee bill must pass through the full RNC to be adopted by the party. Presumably, the act would not stop any other Republicans from running, but the RNC would refuse to endorse the opponent.

3rd parties always seem to hurt the Dems.

Gary Johnson pulled 3x the votes from the right as Stein did from the left in 2016. Didn't change the outcome but could have made the popular vote closer. And Ross Perot pulled in 19% of the vote in 1992, hard to say from where at this point although I'm sure the data is out there. Given the "balanced budget" policy he espoused--against those tax-and-spend liberals and no-new-taxes-right-before-he-raised-taxes Bush, I'm thinking most came from the right.

Of course the RNC would not endorse an opponent. Just as the DNC would never endorse an opponent of President Obama in 2012 or President Clinton in 1996. Party committees always endorse the incumbent president.

There’s NOTHING in that resolution canceling the 2020 primaries or committing their party to officially support Trump as the nominee if he fails to get the support of their convention. Absolutely nothing. This is the sort of clicky-baity story that fully deserves the moniker “fake news.”

All they can do is refuse to allocate any funds to a Trump challenger.

But...locking out other candidates is a bad sign of an eroded democracy. They are saying they will only allow the Trump Party to be in control,
AND saying that moderate Republicans don't count.

This is what history shows has happened in a lot of right wing countries, the consolidation of power, and shutting out those who would object.
More than one roman senator learned the hard way how objections were handled.
