Inside the GM plant where nooses and 'whites-only' signs hung

Toledo, Ohio (CNN)It took 14 months for the noose to show up.

Fourteen months where Marcus Boyd says he endured racist comments, slights, even threats in a hostile workplace run by General Motors.

A workplace where people declared bathrooms were for "whites only," where black supervisors were denounced as "boy" and ignored by their subordinates, where black employees were called "monkey," or told to "go back to Africa."

A workplace where black employees were warned a white colleague's "daddy" was in the Ku Klux Klan. Where white workers wore shirts with Nazi symbols underneath their coveralls.

In Ohio.

In 2018.

2. I fired off six emails this morning

To GM officials. This is vile and disgusting!
In 2018 or any time.

is made or assembled by these mentally defective Trump rubes. How long will it last before you need a new one.

4. A white supervisor was dismissive about the nooses laying around, because

his claim was that no black person was ever lynched that didn't deserve it.

This was perhaps the most jaw-dropping part of the report to me, as I listened to this morning.

19. and yet, nothing about that supervisor being fired

That remark is in the 'print' version, too, but nothing about the supervisor being fired. Jaw-dropping, as you say. It's the 1920s again.

5. GM said, "not acceptable", but accepted it

GM released statements, but their inaction said a lot more.

Trumpistan is here.

18. Did they "accept responsibility" too?

One of the most meaningless phrases, right behind "I apologize if anyone was offended."

6. Huh, it's like focusing only on wage inequality in the belief that people are bigoted because of

economic anxiety and addressing incomes is the best way to reduce racism and sexism might not be the best approach.

17. There is plenty of both, and plenty of overlap

as manipulative people use whatever works to amplify divisions between working people to the benefit of wealthy assholes.

Plenty of bigotry exists because they want wage inequality by keep others down. Some folks feel superior by stepping on others.

9. There are parts of Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania that are very racist

Itís like the Deep South in some places. Iím a little surprised to hear itís like that in Toledo, but not too surprised.

It's a fact.

20. I'll never forget working in Indiana for a short time...

and seeing a guy dressed in a Nazi uniform on late night public service television show. It shocked the hell out of me, and I had come up from Florida. I think it was around 1990 something...

23. My son is currently living in Ohio

Last time I drove out to see him, I was dismayed at the number of Confederate flags I saw.

My aunt lived in Ohio when I was a kid (more than 30 years ago) and I never saw them then. It's really disturbing.

31. That is definitely the truth...

I was raised here and returned here after college to teach. It really was a nice area to raise my family but the hillbillies went really crazy after Mr. Obama was elected. Then they went batshit crazy for tRump.🤮

12. Given that company's conduct during WWII its is not strange at all.

Smuggling improved engine plans etc into their German Opel subsidiary.

Destroying their first electric cars

Conspiring to destroy public transport in LA and other places.

21. I worked in Toledo and Zanesville,

this was before Trump, but yeah, they were good ole boys, and not in a good way.

I live in central Pa., got tossed from our local web chat site for calling Trump a Putin puppet. Our voting precinct voted 80-20 Republican, in the 2018 election.

I remember back in the 50's when I was a little boy, our neighbor burned a cross in his back yard. Back then Protestants and Catholics didn't get along.

22. This Lax Attitude Toward Toxic Racism at GM Starts at the Top

It's not just toward racism either. GM's lax attitude toward the cars it produces is why I am forever in the former GM auto owner category.
