House prepares to break for weekend, all but ensuring longest shutdown in U.S. history

The House prepared to break for the weekend Friday, all but ensuring the partial government shutdown would become the longest in U.S. history, while President Trump continued his efforts to sway public opinion on the need for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

The Democratic-led House held its final votes of the week Friday morning on a pair of bills, one of which would open more departments of government — but was already declared dead-on-arrival in the GOP-controlled Senate. The other bill would ensure federal workers who are furloughed receive back pay once the government reopens.

About 800,000 workers missed a paycheck Friday as the impasse between Trump and Democrats stretched into its 21st day. Without a dramatic turn of events, the shutdown would become one for the record books at midnight.

As of late Friday morning, there were no signs of serious negotiations underway. Trump took to Twitter to tout his high-profile trip to the border on Thursday, writing that “I just got back and it is a far worse situation than almost anyone would understand, an invasion!”

Oh FFS the House hasn't been the problem. They've passed legislation funding the government.

2. Media cant say it, to do that they would have to treat the GOP as what they are, traitors.

Media once again pretends there are two sides to our political system, there hasnt been since Nixon.

There is a group of rich pricks who will do anything to harm the poor and a group who wont.

3. No signs of serious negotiation?

When were the negotiations ever serious. No one except Trump and his small band of stupid racist supporters wants a wall. It is a complete waste of money. Trump is having a tantrum about a political issue and the GOP led Senate is coddling him.

5. Any sign of movement will be touted as a grand victory by the gop.

You don't counter-offer a non-existent offer. They negotiated by putting the bill up to re-open. This is how they get the Dems to break. It's awful bc we care. If you don't care, and have a pile of money to sit on, it's easy to take a hard stance...then mis-characterize any approximation as...not negotiating. At the end of the day, Mitch doesn't want it open. get real. The media (right wing-corporate owned and almost always has been) needs to pay a dear price for what they're doing.
All this is salesmanship. Salesmanship when the seller doesn't want to sell, then criticizes the buyer, for not getting him to yes.
Corporate reform needs to happen. This has already chewed up 2 weeks of the new congress. This is how you negate a mandate from the People. Never forget. If we do this correctly, this could be the last shut-down ever, and the end to mitch the bitch mcConnell, and the illiget.
ps...They haven't spent the last allotment for the wall. Eat the food on your plate before you get more. Basic rich family lesson that doesn't get taught, and eventually society pays for.

4. The House should stay in session even if it is only seen as symbolic

The floor could be used periodically to enter statements into the congressional record about this period in our Nation's history. If we survive this deliberate dysfunction of government orchestrated by the executive branch and Senate, we do not ever want to repeat it.

6. Agreed. It's a pulpit to speak and get coverage.

Do some more work. Everyone else works 40+ hour weeks. A few hard(?) weeks and we get this over with. Sleep in your office, (remember them bringing in beds in the past for the gop? I do.) order pizza. Show solidarity until it hurts(?)
