HUD Instructed Landlords to Use Reserve Funds During Shutdown - Not Knowing Fed Program Had Expired

HUD Instructed Landlords to Use Reserve Funds During Shutdown Ė Not Knowing Federal Program Had Expired

By DAVID BADASHJANUARY 7, 2019 10:49 AM

Secretary Ben Carson's Dept.of Housing and Urban Development on Friday tried to contain the damage caused by President Trump's shutdown of the federal government. HUD sent letters to 1500 landlords that were part of a federal program, instructing them to use reserve funds from a federal program to avoid evicting tenants.

HUD officials, according to The Washington Post, were unaware the program they directed landlords to use had already expired.

Calling it "a last-minute effort to prevent the eviction of thousands of tenants," the Post notes a "lot of those tenants live in units covered by a HUD program that many agency officials didnít realize had expired on Jan. 1," and adds that "they are now unable to renew."

This ignorance of its own programs is just another example of the Trump administration's apparent lack of understanding of what the government does and how it works.

On Friday the Post reported that White House officials had not previously understood "the breadth of the potential impact," of the government shutdown.

4. Yes

Depending on the area, it will take two weeks to ninety days, but they will be evicted if they cannot pay rent.

8. Tenants with Government Subsidies

I suspect most landlords for these subsidized units will not move to evict their tenants. In some states the eviction process can take some time. It would also leave them with empty units and no opportunity to replace them with other subsidized tenants since HUD is shut down. Hopefully HUD will send another letter confirming that back rents will be paid when the shut down has ended.

2. White House officials had not previously understood.....

they use that term without describing exactly who these "officials" are. Basically it is trump and his spawn and Kushner and Miller, with people like Bannon working in the background.

Even if they knew what would happen, they would not have cared.

5. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing...

so typical of this half-assed administration. This is what you get when borderline low-functioning voters instill a moron as their leader, and the rest of us have to suffer for it. When you vote for someone with ZERO experience who doesn't have a clue how or why government works and who won't listen to advice offerred, one can generally expect they might select like-minded uninformed individuals to be their "yes men". tRump is a master of selecting the wrong person for each position. Christ, even Bushie did better than tRump in this area, and that's saying something!

9. A mistake that Obama and his administration would never have made.

Guaranteed. Obama actually hired people who knew what they were doing. tRump's incompetence extends to pretty much everyone he hires.

12. I believe this kind of damage is intended. Someone on the WH staff or speaking to them

has been steering towards this all along. It seems the perfect way to shrink government to Norquist's standard while punishing those most vulnerable by eliminating the myriad pathways by which funding is provided. Who needs a plan to remove or alter the policies one by one when you can shut core sources down and hold them hostage to a single No?

Mulvaney certainly grasps this. I am sure Miller and the other nasty trolls who are hiding behind the Orangutan in chief have lots of other plans if Putin or the Kochs haven't already told them.

13. Tenants should be allowed to stay at Trump apartments and hotels

for the same amount they are paying at their current housing.

Will Trump do it? Of course not. However, it would be great to have a reporter call him out on it.

This should included furloughed workers too who no longer can pay for rent/mortage.

and nobody gets kicked out of their homes.
