3 of 4 of sexual assault kits in Omaha Police evidence are untested. New grant will change that

By Alia Conley

About three out of every four sexual assault kits booked into evidence at the Omaha Police Department have not been tested for DNA, authorities estimate.

A $1.9 million federal grant will let the department begin to catch up on the backlog of sexual assault kits — up to 1,500 of them — that haven’t been tested.

Law enforcement officials and rape survivor support groups have teamed up for the project, dubbed nationally as the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative. The goal is to add information to state and federal DNA databases, make arrests based on the new evidence and help rape survivors.

“Our primary goal of this project is to really stop rapists and bring ourselves in line with evolving national practices,” said Christon MacTaggart, the domestic and sexual violence program manager at the Women’s Fund of Omaha. “And to support survivors who have this experience alongside both of those goals along the way.”
