After the Maddow show last night some things began to fall into place, at least in my mind.

I will try to keep it simple.

Iran wanted to build nuke plants for domestic use and we wouldn't let them. I believe now because Iran would have been a formidable competition for our buddies the Saudis. Now it is becoming clear. No wonder the Saudis and Israelis are in alliance together in support of Kushner and Trump's dealings with Saudis. No one seriously believes that Iran would nuke anyone. It's all about the money, the resources, the economic development etc.

All that back-door stuff with Russia and Saudi Arabia is all about their economic development and to keep, what would be their biggest competition, the very resourceful and talented Iranians. Remember, most of the US Congress was against allowing Iran to develop nuclear energy just for domestic purposes. The Persians are brilliant people, and given half a chance to thrive they would just about take over all the economy of the ME and pose even competition to China in Asia. Hmmmm.

1. You are definitely on to something

Israel and SA wanted sanctions to remain in place to keep the Iranians down economically.

Obama was right to take the Lincoln approach ... do I not destroy my enemy when I make him my friend?

2. The Saudis and Israelis oppose Iran mainly for geopolitical

reasons: Iran supports Assad in Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, both enemies of Israel; and the Houthis in Yemen, because their leaders are at least nominally Shi'i. Iran also appears to be supporting dissent and occasional rebellions by Shi'is in the gulf countries and in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis may also oppose Iran because their own brand of Sunni Islam is intolerant of Shi'is, though it is doubtful that the leaders are very religious.

Israel may have reason to fear the development of Iranian nukes, but consider that they were also quite opposed to Pakistan acquiring nukes, yet they have not represented Pakistan as a significant threat since it became a nuclear power. I surmise that this is because the primary use for nukes is in protecting countries against attacks, not in their actual use. That is why Saddam Hussein wanted the world to think he had them or was on the verge of developing them and that is why North Korea does not want to get rid of theirs.

The more vexing question is why the US should have a dog in this fight at all. I suspect that it is because, like Saddam Hussein and Qaddafi, Iran may represent a threat to the petro-dollar, which is the basis for the use of the US dollar as a reserve currency.

5. If the Persians are so great

why do they let themselves be governed by clerics? I'm just not seeing their brilliance?

6. Nuclear tech to the Saudis

Kidnapping Gulen for Erdogan, dropping sanctions for Putin, Putin gets to sell Arctic reserves to Exxon and the Saudis get a nice thank you war with Iran for Christmas. Netanyahu is undoubtedly in there somewhere as well. The only thing that's stopped the Exxon boys from riding into Tehran on tanks is Putin. There are trillions involved here, multiple times over.
